Sampradaya Sun on Rule of Journalistic Etiquette

Back to Basics

Rocana Is a Hypocrite

Dear Prabhus, Hare Krishna! Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada!

Rocana Dasa says:

There are a number of devotee-run websites that have been freely helping themselves to Sun content for a long time now. They take our edited work and exclude the Sun byline to make it look like it is their website that has attracted the original writing.

But here we have an article which he published in July of 2012, one of hundreds of such examples over a period of more than 7 years, in which Rocana did the very same thing that he now has the audacity to accuse others of doing:

http://www.harekrsna.com/sun/news/07-12/news4355.htm

…which was copy/pasted from:

http://articles.timesofindia.indiatimes.com/2012-07-23/bhubaneswar/32803336_1_jagannath-temple-temple-administration-puri-priests

…without Rocana giving a link to the article he copy/pasted from! Not only that, but he didn’t even have the decency to include the name of the original author (Debabrata Mohapatra). Not only that, but he even went so far as to make it appear that it was his original article by changing the byline to: “BY: SUN STAFF CORRESPONDENT!” Rocana even tried to make it look like the article was copy/pasted from his own website by making the publication date the previous day, instead of the day when he  actually published it!

Now he has finally (beginning in August of 2012) stopped “freely helping himself” to other’s website content without giving them a link or any credit whatsoever. So after more than 7 years of journalistic travesties, he has suddenly “got religion” and has therefore used his new found religion as an excuse to become self-righteous!

Therefore, Rocana Dasa has yet again revealed himself publicly to be a grade A, number one hypocrite!

I stopped submitting articles to the Sun as several times elements of the content, (and on one occassion even the heading) were changed without consulting me, and even after I had requested that I get to re-read any changes before publishing. It smacked of that same old ISKCON senior devotee superiority complex.

  2. From http://groups.google.com/group/istagosthi/msg/bf7a5978c3bd6c2e :

Dear Bhakta Mark Prabhu, you said it better than I could ever hope to. Thank you very much for your input.

BTW, it’s even worse than I thought. Please take a look at what was posted yesterday:

    http://harekrsna.com/sun/news/03-13/news4718.htm

    …which was copy/pasted from:

    http://articles.timesofindia.indiatimes.com/2013-03-08/bhubaneswar/37560857_1_jagannath-temple-servitors-temple-administration

Apparently, Rocana Dasa thinks that if he leaves something out and adds the word, “Significantly,” then that gives him the right to take credit for an article that he had nothing to do with writing, and to fall back into his former devious habits:

    1. Copy/paste an article without including a link to the original.

    2. Omit the name of the actual author.

    3. Change the byline to: “BY: SUN STAFF CORRESPONDENT.”

    4. Change the publication date to the previous day, so as to try to make it seem like the copy/pasting might have been the other way around.

Rocana Dasa’s public deceptiveness/hypocrisy is simply an embarrassment to Srila Prabhupada. He owes his readers, Srila Prabhupada, and all of Srila Prabhupada’s disciples/followers an apology.

He was safely within his limits until he said the following.

There are a number of devotee-run websites that have been freely helping themselves to Sun content for a long time now. They take our edited work and exclude the Sun byline to make it look like it is their website that has attracted the original writing. We’ll deal directly with offending site editors who take an author’s work from the Sun and re-publish it.

If he was an honest brahmana, he would have neglected the self-righteous criticism and simply indicated that his site had a new policy, explained why the policy was appropriate, and explained the consequences of ignoring the policy.

Instead, he PRETENDS as if he is a moral champion who has long tolerated such effrontery, has reached his threshold, and is now clamping down. Not realizing that Supersoul can guide someone like Pratyatosa das to catch his hypocrisy. Can anyone say Kanistha adhikari?

Oh what a tangled web we weave when first we practice to deceive.

No one in the GV / Iskcon cult is honest or truthful. not the GBC, not Bangalore, not the HKS, not the IRM, not Puranjana, not this webpage or any other GV / Iskcon webpage including Rocana’s.

Although I try to always speak the truth, I’m not perfect. Perhaps I made a mistake. What, on this web page, is untrue? Please be specific.

  5. From http://groups.google.com/group/istagosthi/msg/6a869c977ece309a :

Dear Bhakta Mark Prabhu, even if he does have such a financial deal worked out with the Times of India, after being threatened with a lawsuit, what about all of Rocana’s other copy/pastes over a period of more than 7 years? For example:

    http://harekrsna.com/sun/news/11-07/news1636.htm

Although it gives credit to “DAILY INDIA,” if you do the following Google search (including the quotes):

“According to Prof. Kaushal Kishore Mishra of Benaras” “daily india”

…you get nothing but the Sun article. If you search again without the “daily india” included, you get several hits, including:

    http://workofgirishkumardubey.blogspot.com/2010_10_01_archive.html

…which indicates that Girish Kumar Dubey is the actual author. So why not give credit to Mr. Dubey instead of dishonestly changing it to “SUN STAFF CORRESPONDENT?” Isn’t this impersonalism?

This is yet another one of hundreds of examples of the same underhanded behavior on Rocana’s part:

And yet Rocana has the nerve to complain and threaten when someone does to him the very same thing that he’s been doing to others for several years! 🙁

And don’t expect a public apology or even a public reply from Rocana Dasa on this forum or as a comment on:

    http://www.prabhupadanugas.eu/news/?p=34618

…, he’s too puffed up/cowardly to ever engage in an uncensored public debate.

Maybe he has some sort of deal worked out with Times of India, where he pays them big bucks to allow him to reproduce the work of their journalists while referring to them as sun staff correspondents?

Or maybe Debabrata Mohapatra and Naveen Patnaik are actially Sun Staff correspondents moonlighting for Times of India?

Come on Rocana das, there must be an explanation, because you wouldn’t do anything to make Srila Prabhupada look bad.

  7. From http://groups.google.com/group/istagosthi/msg/5fa1120d8198ddc2?hl=en_US :

Oh. You were simply being sarcastic. I thought that you might actually have had some inside information that we didn’t know about. 🙂

However, by taking you seriously, it gave me a good excuse for citing even more hard evidence that Rocana Dasa is grade A, number one hypocrite. 🙂

He is also incompetent/very inconsiderate of his readers. For example, if you go to:

    http://harekrsna.com/sun/editorials/03-13/editorials9864.htm

…and try to save it to your hard drive, you get a not-very-meaningful default file name which is not even unique:

The Sampradaya Sun – Independent Vaisnava News – Editorial Stories – March 2013.htm

I know of no other news website on the Internet which is this brazenly inconsiderate of it’s readers!

Please forgive me for tooting my own horn, but by way of contrast, try going to:

    http://pratyatosa.com/?P=41

If you save it to your hard drive, you get the following, unique, meaningful default file name:

Pratyatosa – Utility – Sanskrit Diacritic Font Text Conversion.htm

    From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dunning%E2%80%93Kruger_effect :

The Dunning-Kruger effect is a cognitive bias in which unskilled individuals suffer from illusory superiority, mistakenly rating their ability much higher than average. This bias is attributed to a metacognitive inability of the unskilled to recognize their mistakes.

And if you save the above referenced web page to your hard drive, you also get a default file name which is unique and meaningful:

    Dunning-Kruger effect – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.htm
