“Feeding behavior of chimpanzees in Gombe National Park, Tanzania”
Susan Taylor, posted June 8 2010:  Chimpanzees living wild in Africa know more than hundred of herbal drugs to treat many of their illnesses, researchers say.
Meanwhile dozens of scientists are researching all those herbs used by chimps to improve the poor condition of efficient human pharmaceutical products.

At the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science,  Richard Wrangham of Harvard University observed that chimps in Tanzania occasionally would not go to the usual feeding ground with the other apes. Instead they would go where they could find a plant called aspilia that they never ate for food.

The animals would carefully select only the young leaves, gently place them in the mouth and then slowly swallow them without chewing.

Eloy Rodriguez of the University of California at Irvine said aspilia leaves, that before they are swallowed, are rich in compounds that kill roundworms, hookworms, fungi and even retroviruses.

Leaves from the chimps’ dung samples lack the compounds.

Wrangham said that while he cannot say for certain that the apes feel better after taking the leaves, it is clear the animals derive no nutritional benefit since the bulk of the leaf is neither chewed nor digested.
