The BP Gulf Oil Spill – The World’s Worst Man-made Ecological Disaster:
“Regarding America , it should not be forgotten that this ‘friend of the world’ was founded on war. Neither have the unmitigated sins of the country’s savage beginnings been expiated. Just as Roman Polanski, the popular film director now in his seventies, is paying for a crime committed in America thirty years ago, so America ‘s karmic visitation from past sins is long overdue. ‘The debts of the father are left to the son,’ and the colonial sins of America ‘s founding fathers have been bequeathed to the world. Since America has grown from atop the slain bodies of the land’s original inhabitants—the slaughtered ‘Indians’ who taught British ‘pilgrims’ how to grow crops and live in their new ‘free world’—war has been the nation’s fuel that has kept ‘the land of the free’ running for hundreds of years.”

The Gulf Oil Disaster: An Omen of Immeasurable Proportions
Patita Pavana das Adhikary
We learn from not only the nimmita-shastras (scriptures dealing with omens, etc.) but from the great Itihasas ( Mahabharata and Ramayana ) and Puranas about the Vedic science of omens. For example, when Duryodhana, the son of Gandhari, was born from a pot buried in the earth, fierce howls of jackals were heard and fires sprang up of their own accord. Seeing that this child would bring total destruction to his Kaurava race, his uncle Vidura advised he should be rejected.
Major omens indicate coming misery to entire regions. For example, when the Pandavas met the Kauravas on the Battlefield of Kurukshetra (in fulfillment of Vidura’s warning), dreadful eclipses appeared overhead. Eclipses, which are ruled by Rahu, as well as comets and meteors which come under Ketu, exacerbate and magnify existing planetary tensions.
To analyze a disaster the magnitude of the BP Gulf oil spill, we must see beyond the usual combinations considered in jataka jyotish (birth astrology with its planetary combinations, etc.). We must look for major portents of the heavens. Surprisingly, there was no eclipse cycle around the time of the BP catastrophe.
In fact, we had expected something of this order. In our first issue of The Astrological Newsletter of Dec. 2009 we warned of an eclipse of dire consequences to appear in the following month, on Jan 15, 2010 . Our focus in the article–which also appeared on the Dandavats website ( http://www.dandavats.com/?p=7951 )–was upon America . As we reported, an ongoing series of five eclipses in America ‘s Moon sign of Capricorn presaged the coming of grave consequences. In a following edition of The Astrological Newsletter , we warned of water problems created by a debilitated Mars who was spending not his usual 1½ month in a sign, but nearly 8 months! Mars was moving back and forth, and sometimes standing still in Cancer– his sign of debility — from 5 Oct 2009 till 27 May 2010, an unheard of 233 days. Certainly this was a warning of a coming water-connected disaster, but exactly what, and when?
The Gamma Virginids meteor shower ran from 4 April till 21 April. Following that, the Eta Aquarid meteor shower emanating from the tail of Halley’s Comet began lighting up the sky. Shrila Prabhupada once commented that in 1914 when he was eighteen he saw Dhumaketu, Halley’s Comet, which presaged World War One.
On 15 April, just five days before the BP debacle, a huge fireball lit up the Midwestern US sky “momentarily turning night into day, rattling houses and causing trees and the ground to shake”. The meteor’s awesome and spectacular display was caught on a couple of police cameras, as seen in the following links:

Shrila Prabhupada once wrote to a disciple that America was founded on bloodshed and it will be liquidated in bloodshed. He advised that anyone who tries to enjoy in America without Krishna consciousness is complicit in the original sins of a so-called great country. In our December 2009 edition of The Astrological Newsletter , we wrote:
“Regarding America , it should not be forgotten that this ‘friend of the world’ was founded on war. Neither have the unmitigated sins of the country’s savage beginnings been expiated. Just as Roman Polanski, the popular film director now in his seventies, is paying for a crime committed in America thirty years ago, so America ‘s karmic visitation from past sins is long overdue. ‘The debts of the father are left to the son,’ and the colonial sins of America ‘s founding fathers have been bequeathed to the world. Ironically, it appears as though the karmic retribution in blood long due has taken the form of oil pollution, an ironic twist to the anti-war slogan “No Blood for Oil”. One of the most vocal opponents to our December Newsletter’s predictions came from Florida (as seen on Dandavats, Dec. 9 th 2009 ), where by now an underwater geyser of oil created by British Petroleum is destroying wildlife and once-pristine beaches. As the future of America hangs by a thread, things are deteriorating quicker than the scientists, executives or politicians are willing to admit.
One of the malefic portents repeatedly mentioned in the shastras is that Deities appear to be weeping in the temples. As we are writing this, we find that a revered 60-foot statue of Lord Jesus Christ in Ohio has been struck by lightning and destroyed. Ironically, the company that insured the statue has refused to cover its destruction based upon their assessment that it was “destroyed by an act of God.” See the omen on film at:

The next eclipse will occur on 26 June 2010 , a lunar event in Sagittarius, Mula nakshatra (“the root”). It will be followed a fortnight later on 11 July by a total solar event in Gemini in Purnavasu nakshatra (so the star of rebirth will be eclipsed.) As seen from the next several next articles, we are not alone in our call that blind optimism must be abandoned in favor of the philosophical yet practical agrarian lifestyle that Shrila Prabhupada taught us as varnashram dharma .
This morning while waist deep in the cool, clear waters of the Black Sea , I wondered as I finished my Gayatri prayers, what have they done to the ocean on the other side of the world?

Eclipses for the Year 2010
Annular Solar Eclipse of January 15
The first solar eclipse of 2010 occurs at the Moon’s ascending node in western Sagittarius. An annular eclipse will be visible from a 300-km-wide track that traverses central Africa, the Indian Ocean and eastern Asia. A partial eclipse is seen within the much broader path of the Moon’s penumbral shadow, which includes eastern Europe, most of Africa, Asia, and Indonesia.
Partial Lunar Eclipse of June 26
The first partial lunar eclipse of 2010 occurs at the Moon’s ascending node in western Sagittarius about 3° east of the Lagoon Nebula (M8). It will be visible after sunset from Australia, from much of the Americas, the Pacific and eastern Asia. It will be seen before sunrise setting over western North and South America .
The lunar eclipse will occur in the early morning hours of Saturday, June 26 as the moon crosses through the southern portion of Earth’s shadow in the constellation Sagittarius. At least some of this interesting event will be visible from western and central North America. – Half-hidden moon – At its peak, slightly more than half of the moon’s diameter will be dramatically darkened, possibly tinged slightly with a mixture of faint orange and reddish hues.
Total Solar Eclipse of July 11
The second total solar eclipse of 2010 occurs at the Moon’s descending node in central Gemini just 45 arc-minutes east of the 3rd magnitude star Delta Geminorum. The path of totality will only be visible in the southern Pacific Ocean, Easter Island, and parts of southern Chile and Argentina. A partial eclipse will be visible in many parts of southern South America.
The eclipse will be visible across the Pacific Ocean, and in the tip of South America. It will last over 5 minutes at maximum, and will be visible over a path up to 259 km wide. The total eclipse begins north-east of New Zealand at 18:15:15 UT, and ends in Patagonia at 20:51:42 UT. The maximum eclipse is at 19:33:34 UT, when the total phase will last over 5 minutes. The partial eclipse will be visible over the southern Pacific and southern South America between 17:09:40 UT and 21:57:16 UT.
Total Lunar Eclipse of December 21
The last lunar eclipse of 2010 is especially well placed for observers throughout North America. The eclipse occurs at the Moon’s descending node in eastern Taurus, four days before perigee.
The eclipse will be visible throughout most of eastern Asia, Australia, the Pacific Ocean, the Americas, and Europe. It will be visible after midnight of December 21 in North and South America. Since the Moon will be almost directly overhead from these locations, this should be an excellent chance to view a rare total lunar eclipse. The beginning of the total eclipse will be visible from northern Europe just before sunrise. The end of the total eclipse will be visible rising at sunset for Japan and northeastern Asia.
