“India will have Mercedes city buses soon”

TIMES OF INDIA, 02 Jul 2010 – Always dreamt of taking a ride in the Mercedes but not enough money to buy one? Well your dreams are soon going to be a reality and in a grander manner. The German manufacturer has announced to set up a dedicated assembly line to produce high-end city (low floor) buses.

Wilfried Aulbur, managing director of Mercedes-Benz India, said “In India, our 2- and 3-axle luxury coaches have been received very well. We would now like to expand into the city buses segment,”

The assembly line will meet manufacturing needs of city buses as well as the already available 2-axle and 3-axle luxury coaches.

The company will set up a dedicated assembly line in Pune, and also plans to offer an integrated body building facility.

The market for high-end city buses is lucrative. It is estimated at approximately 500 units per annum and expected to grow by 20 per cent each year. Mercedes-Benz India sees a potential in this niche market and as such plans to offer with solutions that are been successfully operated in similar operating conditions in other parts of the world.

Mercedes-Benz has already imported a low floor and a semi-low floor city bus for the product clinic. The Product clinic for city buses with two Mercedes-Benz buses is expected to start by June 2010.
