Dear Neighbors,
The Floyd Fest was held over this last weekend.
I was able to take a few boxes of books there on Saturday and Sunday.
I found the best way to sell books is to not sell them at all, but simply show them in a detached way while mumbling something about yoga, karma, reincarnation, deeply philosophical texts exploring wisdom etc.
“I want you to take one of these and give any donation whatsoever, whatever you feel comfortable with.”
The responses of some people are casual, but occasionally there is a very enthusiastic response, “I’ve been looking for something like this!”
A couple were standing , in deep, serious conversation. I didn’t want to interrupt and approached other people, thinking the couple had lost their wallet or car keys or something, they both looked very concerned about something.
Finally I approached them and learned that the guy was having an existential crisis for the last few days, wondering what he is here for, why he exists, etc.
He took the book like a drowning man grabbing a rope.
I have his email address, he lives in Roanoke.
Another young man saw the book and replied, “I’ve just finished reading the Bhagavad Gita As it Is by A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada and was wondering what I should read next.”
He lives in Blacksburg, I have his email address.
A young lady says she has fond memories as a child dancing in the temple and watering “the plant” in Tennessee or Pennsylvania or both, she doesn’t remember. Her father was a devotee, she now runs a massage and yoga school in Christiansburg, I have her email.
I have several similar contacts, about 30 of them, living in the area of Roanoke, Blacksburg, Floyd region, all within 1 or 2 hours of our community. I’ve told these people I plan to hold a gathering in their home with their friends.
They are simply waiting for me to say when.
I’ll let you know when this comes together, and bring as many devotees as would seem appropriate for the occasion.
Floyd is filled with people like us, vegetarians, yogis, living alternative lifestyles. Many have had exposure to Krishna years ago and have nostalgic memories of love feasts and kirtans. It would be wonderful to hod a program at their community center bringing the kids from our village to meet their kids.
Floyd is only an hour away, like driving to Winston Salem.
