VrindavanToday.org | Mathura, 2011.08.16 (DJ): Local authorities have been warned that the Tajewala Barrage released an extra 539,000 cusecs of water in the Yamuna on Tuesday. This means that many of the lowlying areas on the Yamuna’s banks in Mathura district will start to be inundated. In Rajpur (Vrindavan), a ten-meter section of the Yamuna embankment road leading to Akrura Ghat was washed away, leaving the road impassable.
In view of the delicacy of the situation, officers from all district departments have had their holidays cancelled.
The water released from the Tajewala (Hathnikund) Barrage should reach Mathura district in two or three days and will most certainly raise water levels here. There is a distinct possibility that they will reach the danger mark, causing concern in the relevant departments.
Additional District Magistrate (Finance and Revenue) Manmohan Chaudhary advised people living on the flood plain to start moving to safe ground. He instructed officers from his department to begin preparations for refuge camps other kinds of relief for those who will inevitably be displaced or affected in the case of flooding. Sri Chaudhary was also present in Rajpur at the affected embankment site with members of the Public Works Department from the Mat block, under whose jurisdiction this area falls.
At the same time acting DM and CDO Srimati S. Mathushalini cancelled holidays for all district officers except for special permissions.
Last year’s record floods began at about Raksha bandhan time and danger levels were reached on Aug. 21. The water released from Tajewala at that time was considerably less than the amount reported today.
