Basavaraj F Kattimani, TNN Sep 20, 2011, 10.48pm IST — HUBLI: The midday meal scheme that applied only to primary and high school students until now, will be extended to postgraduate students of various PG courses in Karnatak University, Dharwad.
Karnatak University, Dharwad (KUD) is perhaps the first university in the state to take measures to provide midday meals to its PG students on the lines of primary and high school students. KUD is busy in making efforts to implement this project.
As per the plan, midday meals will be provided to students, who wish to avail of the facility at the university. KUD has already entered into an MOU with Iskcon, to supply midday meals to PG students. Iskcon is already supplying midday meals to primary and high schools in the district.
The idea of proving midday meals to students of KUD was mooted by vice-chancellor H B Walikar. “We will start providing midday meals to PG students from September 28,” S B Inchageri, registrar, Karnatak University, Dharwad, told TOI. The midday meals scheme will be implemented to help hostel students who hail from villages in the district.
“We want to provide quality and nutritious food to these students and enable them to focus on their studies instead of spending too much time on lunch during lunch breaks,” he added.
Rs 5 will be collected from each student availing the scheme, while the university will contribute Rs 5 for each student per meal provided to students by Iskcon. All departments have been instructed to register names of the students interested to avail the scheme.
Students have to get monthly food coupons from their respective departments by paying the amount in advance. The meals will be provided to those who produce the food coupons. Arrangements have been made to serve midday meals at Gandhi Bhavan. “Initially, we are expecting about 200 students while it may go up once the midday meals is introduced in the university,” said Inchageri.
He also said that there are plans to provide midday meals to employees of the university, but it has not yet been finalized.
