Divali is a Day of Happiness | B.Radha-Govinda

Divali is a day of happiness, though for so many of us, being in such isolated situation from devotees is not so happy.

The original Divali festival of lights (in happiness) was celebrated by Bali Maharaj with his associates after Vamandev agreed to fulfill Bali Maharaj’s request that He (Vamandev) stay forever with Bali Maharaj. Then the Divali was celebrated when Lord Ramacandra reached Ayodhya, after having killed Ravana.

For Govardhan Puja:

Krishna, Who is known as Govinda, is He Who gives pleasure to the “go”s – the cows (go), gopis, gopas and senses (also known as go).

After Lord Indra sent torrents of rain to punish the inhabitants of Vrndavan for neglecting to do the puja to him that they were offering every year, and instead offered the worship to Giriraj Govardhan, Indradev realized his offense when Krishna lifted Govardhan to protect the Vrajavasis, Lord Indra’s understanding from this, that Krishna was the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

In his desire to be excused from the offense, and knowing how dear the cows were to Krishna, Indra took shelter of Mother Surabhi, asking her to accept him as her son, and to accompany him in his going to beg Krishna for forgiveness, by going in front of Indra when he went to Krishna. When Surabhi Mata went before Krishna, Krishna was so pleased to see her, and addressed her as “Mother”. She then told Krishna, “I’ve brought my son,” and asked Krishna to forgive Indra for his offenses. The devatas being present with Indra, Surabhi Mata lavished her milk, which was used by them to bathe Krishna. Krishna then told Indra to go to Navadvipa with Mother Surabhi, and to undergo penance there for his purification.
