Prabhupada, New Vrindaban, June 13, 1969 — […] All these yogic process means to come to the stage of samadhi. Samadhi. And that is said also in the authoritative yogic literature. But what is that samadhi? Samadhi means not to deviate. The mind should always be absorbed in Krishna thought without any deviation.
So anyone who is chanting Hare Krishna, he is in samadhi. Anyone who is cooking for Krishna, he is in samadhi. Anyones who is typing for Krishna, he is in samadhi. Anyone who is working in the field for Krishna, he is in samadhi.
Because his consciousness is that, “I am doing here for satisfaction of Krishna.” Anukulyena krsnanusilanam. Anusilanam, cultivation of Krishna knowledge favorably, not unfavorably.
Then it is perfection. Bhaktir uttama. Anukulyena. Anyabhilasita-sunyam [BRS 1.1.11]. When you cook, if you think, “Oh, this nice thing is being cooked. I shall eat it very nicely,” then it is not Krishna.
But while cooking, if you think, “Let me do it very nicely so that Krishna will taste it,” it is Krishna consciousness. The same thing. Activities is the same, but the consciousness is different. That is samadhi.
So samadhi is not very extraordinary thing. One has to become simply serious and sincere to Krishna. Then he is in samadhi. That is confirmed in the Bhagavad-gita:
yoginam api sarvesam mad-gatenantar-atmana sraddhavan bhajate yo mam sa me yuktatamo matah [Bg. 6.47]
“Anyone who is always thinking of Me within his heart and he’s engaged in My service, he’s first-class yogi.” So any person who is engaged in Krishna consciousness, who’s acting simply for Krishna twenty-four hours, he’s in samadhi. Samadhina tad, anusmara tad-vicestitam.
Anusmara: “That meditation should not be manufactured by you, but under the direction of the representative of Krishna.” Therefore it is called anusmara.
Cittaga…, akhilasya bandhasya muktaye. Then again, Sridhara Svami says that “This process is for giving liberation from all kinds of material bondage.” Akhilasya bandhasya muktaye tam anusmara smrtya varnayata.
And again Sridhara Svami gives note herewith that “Not only you meditate, but you preach. That will help your meditation.”
Just like I am speaking to you. I am meditating simultaneously. Unless I remember, how can I speak to you? Unless my attention is concentrated without any diversion in Krishna subject matter, how can I speak to you? So that is also samadhi.
Don’t think that one who is simply sitting, he is in samadhi. One who is preaching, he’s also in samadhi, because he’s thinking of Krishna. Otherwise, how he can talk of Krishna if he does not think of Krishna?
Sridhara Swami gives… Tam anusmara smrtya varnayata. Varnayata means, “Describe also, preach.” Ity artha. Etac ca vakhyantaram iti madhyama-purusa-prayogah.
So this preaching, sravanam kirtanam, simply hearing of Krishna and chanting of Krishna, preaching of Krishna, is samadhi. And this will make one liberated, akhila-bandha-muktaye, from all kinds of bondage, material bondage.
Thank you very much.
