Sept 22, USA — Lately, more and more, I’ve been thinking about the words of Dinesh Prabhu, ISKCON’s first “tapeswara,” when I told him at ISKCON New York in 1971, “I want to travel with Prabhupada so that I can make sure that his PA systems are first class and so that that I can record his lectures, making them the highest quality possible.” Dinesh’s simple reply was, “That’s for devotees who are not very spiritually advanced; they need a lot of personal association with Prabhupada!” My immediate reply was, “That’s me! Not very spiritually advanced! I want to travel with Prabhupada!”
Approximately one year later, at ISKCON New Vrindaban, I made this proposal to Srila Prabhupada in person. (A report, by Satsvarupa, on this conversation is in the VedaBase.)
This morning, after being up since 3 AM, I took a short nap. During this nap I had a vivid dream that I was at an ISKCON festival. My wife was there. I said to her, “Your problem is that you are not very spiritually advanced! The fact that you can’t even understand that Srila Prabhupada prescribed a ritvik system of initiations for ISKCON proves that you are not very advanced.”
A little later, I said to Kavicandra Maharaja in private, “Why are you a guru? The fact that you need to be worshiped as a guru in order to feel enlivened in Krishna consciousness means that you are not very spiritually advanced!”
Then, to a group of ISKCON “gurus” as they were coming down a stairway toward me, I said, “Like I said earlier to Kavicandra–Is Kavicandra here?–Why do you want to be a guru within ISKCON? Srila Prabhupada is the guru for ISKCON. Why do we need more gurus than Srila Prabhupada? Why, when ISKCON gurus are no longer able to be gurus, do they usually stop doing any devotional service whatsoever? It’s because they are not very spiritually advanced and never were. The fact that you require to have all of this fame, adoration and distinction, in order to feel enlivened to do some service for Srila Prabhupada, means that you are not very spiritually advanced!”
Then I woke up and immediately typed what I had dreamed into my computer.
