Madhu Pandit Dasa
A B. Tech in civil engineering and an M. Tech from the Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai, Madhu Pandit Dasa made a remarkable career switch and dedicated his life to serving A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. A passionate student of science, who had been selected by the National Talent Search programme prior to joining IIT, he has been spreading the message of spiritualism and is currently the chairman of the Akshaya Patra Foundation and the India Heritage Foundation and president, Iskcon-Bangalore.
The Akshaya Patra movement was conceived by him to support education for the indigent through a mid-day meal scheme. He leveraged technology and philanthropy for alleviating hunger of school children and created the Akshaya Patra Programme that is today one of the finest technology-driven social sector initiatives, providing unlimited, free, hygienic, nutritious meals every day to more than a million school children in 18 locations in eight states in India.
Madhu Pandit Dasa built the Iskon Sri Radha Krishna Temple through one of India’s largest fundraising efforts of those days and was also the driving force behind eco-friendly and sustainable organic farm epitomized by the Hare Krishna Nature Farm, Mysore, which is a model farm in sustainable and organic farming in Karnataka, specific to the farmers of dry lands. The Harvard Business School has made a case study of the Akshaya Patra programme and its corporate governance practices won it the CNBC India Business Leader Award-2008 under the category ‘Society Enterprise of the year’. The transparency and accountability has attracted ‘ICAI Award for Excellence in Financial Reporting’ conferred by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India for three consecutive years 2008-11. The programme also won the Tech Awards Laureates 2009, as one of 15 global innovators recognized each year for applying technology to benefit humanity and spark global change.
