Singer Ne-Yo is transitioning to a vegan diet, citing a desire for dietary discipline and his love of animals.
“Went vegan for the new year mainly just to test my discipline, but after reading up on animal cruelty and what-not, [there’s] much more meaning to it,” Ne-Yo tweeted Jan. 1.
Ne-Yo told his 2.7 million Twitter followers that he wanted to kick-start the new year with a 100 percent plant-based diet. “What’s everybody’s New Year’s resolution?” he asked. “I’m gonna try to go Vegan. Discipline test. NOT looking forward to it. Wish me luck!!”
The 30-year-old musician also solicited vegan recipes from Twitter fans: “Ok. To any Vegans out there. Imma need your help. Need some quick snack ideas that I can eat as well as any recipes.”
Ne-Yo joins a long list of celebrities who have gone vegan, including rockers Pink, Paul McCartney, Moby, Carrie Underwood and Gwen Stefani. While many celebs cite health as the primary driver of their vegan diet, others point to animal cruelty and environmental reasons.
In October 2012, director James Cameron made headlines when he announced that he switched to a vegan diet, saying eating meat is not only cruel to animals, but destroys the planet.
“You can’t be an environmentalist, you can’t be an ocean steward, without truly walking the walk,” said Cameron, 58. “And you can’t walk the walk in the world of the future, the world ahead of us, the world of our children, not eating a plant-based diet.”
In explaining why he converted to a vegan lifestyle, Cameron pointed to the environmental damage that raising livestock for food causes.
“It’s not a requirement to eat animals, we just choose to do it,” he said. “So it becomes a moral choice and one that is having a huge impact on the planet, using up resources and destroying the biosphere.”
