video: care for aging people in ISKCON – Janmastami das interview
PADA: Srila Prabhupada wanted residential apartments and a “hospice” type facility for his elderly ISKCON disciples in Vrndavana where they could retire. And eventually of course, they would also die there while taking shelter of the Holy Dham, thus aiding their path back to Krishna.
Problem is, this facility was never created. Now what seems to happen in some rare cases at least, a few independent devotees might get together to help create a “one time only” facility for one of their personal friends, but there is no organized system.
This is certainly another major problem with the GBC mis-managing, the devotees who wanted to retire in an ISKCON retirement program have not been able to do so, and thus they are dying off in the West, and sometimes in very depressing mundane material situations. Its another big hole in the programs Srila Prabhupada wanted and desired. ys pd
Nobody wants to talk about this problem. My guess is those who have the means will be taken care of by their disciples and followers, and those without the means will end up as you described, in deplorable mundane situations, possibly even having to eat animal flesh in their lingering last days…..There are probably those who would become despondent altogether and take their life to avoid such a horrendous end of their days….I’m curious to know what are Srila Prabhupada’s exact quotes on this important topic.
These same people who are so concerned about leaving their bodies “like Srila Prabhupada did” have no interest whatsoever in taking vanaprastha like Srila Prabhupada did: Leave home, live alone in a small apartment, and never look back!
In any case, my experience is that devotees who associate in any way, shape or form with members of present-day ISKCON cannot be trusted. Even many so-called Prabhupadanugas cannot be trusted. One symptom of such untrustworthy contamination is the so-called Prabhupadanuga who says, “I’m not a Ritvik because of blah, blah, blah!” This is obviously motivated by the fact that many ISKCONites are ritvik bashers who are still trying to make Srila Prahupada’s own terminology into a dirty word!
Devotees can go anywhere, use anything in Krishna’s service, and leave their bodies anywhere. Just like Sriman George Harrison. He knew exactly what he was doing when chose to leave his body in his Los Angeles apartment. What happens to these disgusting bags of stool, blood, mucus, pus, skin, bone, hairs and flesh is not very important.
In my particular case, funeral arrangements here in Hancock, Michigan, USA have already been made and are 100% paid for, so as not to be a burden upon my wife and children.
Pratyatosa Dasa (ACBSP) says: Devotees can go anywhere, use anything in Krishna’s service, and leave their bodies anywhere. Just like Sriman George Harrison. He knew exactly what he was doing when he chose to leave his body in his Los Angeles apartment. What happens to these disgusting bags of stool, blood, mucus, pus, skin, bone, hairs and flesh is not very important.
