Eight years after his tragic death from lung cancer, The Beatles’ lead-guitarist, George Harrison, was honored with a posthumous star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Tuesday, according to the Associated Press.
Hundreds of faithful fans and Harrison’s closest friends gathered in Hollywood to witness the unveiling of the star, including Paul McCartney, Tom Petty, and actor Tom Hanks with his wife Rita Wilson.
Harrison is only the second of the Fab Foursome to receive a singular honor on the Walk of Fame, following John Lennon, who was shot to death by a crazed fan in 1980. Harrison’s other surviving bandmate, drummer Ringo Starr, was not in attendance.
Harrison’s widow, Olivia, and their son, Dhani, were on hand to speak of Harrison following the ceremony. “He was a beautiful, mystical man living in a material world,” Olivia Harrison said of her late husband. Son, Dhani, said only, “Hare Krishna,” following other tributes from Hanks, Los Angeles City Councilman Tom LaBonge, and Harrison’s close friend, Monty Python alum Eric Idle, the L.A. Times reported.
McCartney was not among those who were scheduled to speak, but concluded the ceremony by simply saying, “Thank you!” to the assembled fans in front of the Capitol Records Tower where Harrison’s star is situated close to those of the Beatles and Lennon.
