INSULTING AND FAULT FINDING – FAULT WITH THE GREAT MAHAJANA AUTHORITIES.

Note:  By 1979-1980, some leading members of the SAAS started to experience some difficulties.   Notwithstanding the tremendous amount of propaganda to promote the myth of the appointment and that the original 11 were fully realized pure devotees, the weight of guru-aparadha and guror-avajna, started to manifest.

Note:  August 1980, Dallas, Texas.   The LGEP had to convene its fire brigade to calm the upheaval caused by the some of its deviated members, and they attempted to explain to the rank and file devotees, how an “appointed pure devotee” could possibly exhibit such material conditioning and deviant behaviors.

One the other hand, the “living gurus”, fallen early into embarrassing manifestations of material conditioning or impurity, strained to explain it all away by singing of the eternal preceptor’s alleged character lapses.

For example, in their August 1980 GBC report, in an attempt to explain some deviant behaviors of some of the “living gurus” the LGEP advocates alleged, “Even Bhishmadeva, who was one of the great Mahajanas or authorities in understanding Krishna consciousness, was affected by this materialistic association (of women and money). If even Bhishmadeva can be affected by materialistic association, then what to speak of ourselves.”

Lest we be misled, Srila Prabhupada certifies Bhishma’s absolutely liberated status, “Sri Bhishmadeva is a great devotee of the Lord in the relation of servitorship (an eternally pure relationship with God).” (SB 1.9.34)

“As a Mahajana or authority he was on the level of Brahma, Narada and Shiva, although he was a human being. Qualification on a par with the great demigods is possible only by attainment of spiritual perfection.” (SB 1.9.34)

Note; The 1980 G.B.C. report continued: “There are examples in the Srimad Bhagavatam of great devotees having difficulties… Lord Brahma was affected by sex attraction for his daughter.” (!)

But Srila Prabhupada establishes Lord Brahma’s liberated and pure status: “This extraordinary immorality on the part of Lord Brahma was heard to have occurred in some particular kalpa (epoch), but it could not have happened in the kalpa in which Brahma heard directly from the Lord the four essential verses of Srimad Bhagavatam, because the Lord benedicted Brahma, after giving him lessons on the Bhagavatam, that he would never be bewildered in any kalpa whatsoever. This indicates that before the hearing of Srimad Bhagavatam he might have fallen victim to such sensuality, but after hearing Srimad Bhagavatam directly from the Lord there was no possibility of such failures.” (SB 3.12.28)

Note: When did Lord Brahma experience some apparent sex attraction? Before hearing the essential Bhagavatam verses. Yet the GBC failed entirely to mention that Lord Brahma’s illusion had occurred before he heard the Bhagavatam verses. The GBC implies, quite unfairly, that Brahma’s illusion occurred after he had heard the Bhagavatam and had become a liberated eternal preceptor guru.

Srila Prabhupada further explains, with brilliant clarity, the nature of Lord Brahma’s position in a letter, dated 23rd of March 1969, to Himavati devi dasi: “There are many other stories also, but such apparent falling is without any influence to very, very advanced devotees. A neophyte should always be careful. One should not discuss about such great devotee’s apparent fall-down. Just like one should not discuss about the sun who evaporates urine from the earth; it is possible for the sun to do it, and still remains the sun, but for ordinary man if he lives in a filthy place he will be infected. So Lord Shiva or Lord Brahma, they are highly elevated devotees, and we should not try to criticize about their behavior even though it appears against the rules.

“…So far Lord Brahma and his attraction for his daughter; this illustration should be taken by conditioned souls, that even a person like Brahma is sometimes victimized, how much careful we should be. Not that even Brahma was enticed, so we shall become enticed more and more. This is an example set for us by great devotees.”

Note: It is thus clear that a progressing candidate on the path of devotional service must use the greatest caution while analyzing the exalted position of Brahma and other Mahajanas. It is obvious from thr LGEP writings that they did not understand the difference between an eternal associate of Krsnal (nitya-parsada), and a regular sadhaka (practitioner in devotional service).

The GBC also claimed about another exalted liberated devotee, “Dhruva maharaja became overwhelmed by anger at the yakshas for killing his brother.”

Srila Prabhupada clarifies, “Dhruva Maharaja was a liberated soul, and actually he was not angry with anyone, but because he was a ruler, it was his duty to become angry for some time in order to keep the law and order of the state.” (SB 4.11.13)

Srila Prabhupada writes, “Dhruva Maharaja was a maha-bhagavata, or a first class pure devotee…” (SB 4.12.8)

“It is our duty to remember always that in comparison to Dhruva Maharaja, we are very insignificant. We cannot do anything like what Dhruva Maharaja did for self realization, because we are absolutely incompetent to execute such service.” (SB 4.8.73)

And “By associating constantly with the Supreme Personality of Godhead in his heart, Dhruva Maharaja naturally became equal to the greatest, Brahman, by His association and thus he became the heaviest, and the entire universe trembled.” (SB 4.8.78)

Note: The 1980 G.B.C. report even chides Arjuna, for outright “losing sight of Krishna”: “Arjuna had difficulties in the beginning of the battle of Kuruksetra, but it was due to his losing sight of Krishna, not because of his accepting a superior position to Krishna. It was Arjuna’s duty to accept the Supreme Lord as his chariot driver in his fight against Duryodhana’s forces. Similarly, it is the duty of ISKCON’s initiating gurus to sit on their Vyasasanas (high seats meant for pure devotees) and defeat the ignorance of the age by their strong preaching. Some of our men may have difficulties, but their problems are due to their having lost sight of Krishna for the moment, not due to sitting on a Vyasasana.” The SAAS and the GBC’s rather boldly and impudently compared the abominable illicit activities manifest in the “living guru” project (LGEP)  to the so-called illusions of Krishna’s eternally pure associate.

Note: As recently as January 7th 1990, while giving a Bhagavatam class, prior to a temple president’s meeting on the so-called guru issue, a “living guru” based in East India, (also one of the co-authors of the August 1980 GBC report) alleged that sometimes, for a few minutes, great eternally liberated guru devotees such as Bhishma and Arjuna fall under Mahamaya, the Lord’s deluding energy, which covers those who are envious of the Lord.

Yet Srila Prabhupada has very different things to say: “Arjuna conquered both sleep and ignorance because of his friendship with Krishna. As a great devotee of Krishna, Arjuna could not forget Krishna even for a moment, because that is the nature of a devotee. Either in waking or sleeping, a devotee of the Lord can never be free of thinking of Krishna’s name, form, qualities, and pastimes. Thus a devotee of Krishna can conquer both sleep and ignorance simply by thinking of Krishna constantly. That is called Krishna consciousness.” (Unedited unrevised Bhagavad-Gita As It Is 1.24)

And Srila Prabhupada also writes of Arjuna, “His intelligence could not be polluted at any time, because he was a devotee and constant companion of the Lord, as is clear in the fourth chapter of Bhagavad-gita. Apparently Arjuna’s intelligence became polluted because otherwise there would not have been a chance to deliver the teachings of Bhagavad Gita for the good of all polluted conditioned souls engaged in material bondage by the conception of the false material body…” (SB 1.9.36)

Srila Prabhupada further illuminates Arjuna’s awesome liberated status: “Although Arjuna is with Krishna in innumerable different material universes at one time, still there is only one spirit soul who is Arjuna. This spiritual soul expands into many different bodies, and thus you can understand that there are also incarnations of devotees as well as incarnation of Krishna. This is the power of the spirit soul, that it is unlimited. Such conception cannot be understood while one is in the conditioned state.” (Letter, 12 December 1968)

Further the concept that a pure devotee (fully realized) may forget Krishna, even for a moment, is not supported by Srila Prabhupada and the previous acharyas. “As indicated by the word satatam and nityasah, which mean ‘always,’ ‘regularly,’ or ‘every day,’ a pure devotee constantly remembers Krishna and meditates upon Him….A pure devotee cannot forget the Supreme Lord for a moment, and similarly the Supreme Lord cannot forget His pure devotee for a moment.” (Bhagavad-Gita As It Is 8.14

The Absolute Truth, or the Supreme Personality of Godhead, is realized by hearing about Him in all submission and love from a bona fide authority who is a representative of the twelve great authorities mentioned in the Srimad Bhagavatam. SB 3.5.31

It is not wonderful for persons who have accepted the transient material body as the self to engage always in deriding great souls. Such envy on the part of materialistic persons is very good because that is the way they fall down. They are diminished by the dust of the feet of great personalities.

Everything depends on the strength of the recipient. For example, due to the scorching sunshine many vegetables and flowers dry up, and many grow luxuriantly. Thus it is the recipient that causes growth and dwindling. Similarly, mahīyasāṁ pāda-rajo-’bhiṣekam: the dust of the lotus feet of great personalities offers all good to the recipient, but the same dust can also do harm. Those who are offenders at the lotus feet of a great personality dry up; their godly qualities diminish. A great soul may forgive offenses, but Kṛṣṇa does not excuse offenses to the dust of that great soul’s feet, just as one can tolerate the scorching sunshine on one’s head but cannot tolerate the scorching sunshine on one’s feet. An offender glides down more and more; therefore he naturally continues to commit offenses at the feet of the great soul. Offenses are generally committed by persons who falsely identify with the impermanent body. King Dakṣa was deeply engrossed in a misconception because he identified the body with the soul. He offended the lotus feet of Lord Śiva because he thought that his body, being the father of the body of Satī, was superior to Lord Śiva’s. Generally, less intelligent men misidentify in that way, and they act in the bodily concept of life. Thus they are subject to commit more and more offenses at the lotus feet of great souls. One who has such a concept of life is considered to be in the class of animals like cows and asses.

Srila Prabhupada: The Supreme Lord can never be understood by irresponsible persons who think the pastimes of Rādhā and Kṛṣṇa to be ordinary affairs. The rāsa dance is arranged by Kṛṣṇa’s internal potency yogamāyā, and it is beyond the grasp of the materially affected person. Trying to throw mud into transcendence with their perversity, the sahajiyās misinterpret the sayings tat-paratvena nirmalam and tat-paro bhavet. By misinterpreting tādrśīḥ krīḍāḥ, they want to indulge in sex while pretending to imitate Lord Kṛṣṇa. But one must actually understand the imports of the words through the intelligence of the authorized gosvāmīs. Śrīla Narottama dāsa Ṭhākura, in his prayers to the Gosvāmīs, has explained his inability to understand such spiritual affairs. Sr Caitanya-caritamrta – 1975 Edition  The Confidential Reasons for Lord Caitanya’s Appearance Adi 4.34

“…The froggish philosophers and mundane wranglers in science and mathematical calculation may not believe in the inconceivable potency of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, but they are sometimes puzzled by the wonderful jugglery of man and nature. Such jugglers and magicians of the mundane world are actually puzzled by the jugglery of the lording in His transcendental activities by saying it is all mythology… There is nothing impossible or mythological in the Supreme Omnipotent person.” Srimad-Bhagavatam 3.6.40

All Glories to Srila Prabhupada !

    __________________________________
There is not a single example in Srila Prabhupada’s books of a formally authorised diksa guru, in our disciplic succession, ever deviating from the path of devotional service. The rejection of Sukracarya is sometimes used to validate the view that acaryas fall down, or can be rejected, but this example is highly misleading since he was never an authorised member of our disciplic succession. Lord Brahma’s pastimes with his daughter are sometimes mentioned. Yet it is clearly stated in the Srimad-Bhagavatam that these incidents occurred before Lord Brahma became the head of our sampradaya. Indeed, when the disciple Nitai referred to the pastime as an example of an acarya falling down, Srila Prabhupada became most displeased.

Aksayananda: I was recently told by one devotee that the acarya does not have to be a pure devotee. [….]

Prabhupada: Who is that rascal? […]

Aksayananda: He said it. Nitai said it. He said it in this context. He said that Lord Brahma is the acarya in the Brahma-sampradaya, but yet he is sometimes afflicted by passion. So therefore he is saying that it appears that the acarya does not have to be a pure devotee. So it does not seem right. […]

Prabhupada: He manufactured his idea. Therefore he’s a rascal. Therefore he’s a rascal. Nitai has become an authority? […] He thought something rascaldom, and he is expressing that. Therefore he is more rascal. These things are going on. (Morning Walk, Vrindavan, December 10th, 1975)

  2. If Sukracarya is not a member of our disciplic succession as quoted by Hunyadi Marica, then what is the position of the Braspati ?

Are they not both considered Spiritual Master ?

  3. Mahesh Raja says:

In reply to Amar Puri Prabhu:

This is to clarify some points.

Subject : Priest AS Spiritual Master (Guru) means that when there is PARTICULAR TYPE OF GURU TO EXECUTE A PARTICULAR TYPE OF DUTY.

    1) Priest is ALSO called Guru (Spiritual Master). BUT Diksa guru is MAHA BHAGAVATA by QUALIFICATION

    2) ONE MUST APPROACH A PARTICULAR TYPE OF GURU TO EXECUTE A PARTICULAR TYPE OF DUTY. Therefore although Visvarupa was INFERIOR TO THE DEMIGODS, the demigods accepted him as their guru to conquer the demons.

SB 1.9.8 P The Passing Away of Bhismadeva in the Presence of Lord Krsna
Angirasa: He is the son of Maharsi Angira and is known as BRHASPATI, THE PRIEST OF THE DEMIGODS. It is said that Dronacarya was his partial incarnation. Sukracarya was the spiritual master of the demons, and Brhaspati challenged him. His son is Kaca, and he delivered the fire weapon first to Bharadvaja Muni. He begot six sons (like the fire-god) by his wife Candramasi, one of the reputed stars. He could travel in space, and therefore he could present himself even in the planets of Brahmaloka and Indraloka. He advised the King of heaven, Indra, about conquering the demons. Once he cursed Indra, who thus had to become a hog on the earth and was unwilling to return to heaven. Such is the power of the attraction of the illusory energy. Even a hog does not wish to part with its earthly possessions in exchange for a heavenly kingdom. He was the religious preceptor of the natives of different planets.

    Chapter Seven
Indra Offends His Spiritual Master, Brhaspati.

As related in this chapter, Indra, the King of heaven, committed an offense at the feet of his spiritual master, Brhaspati. Brhaspati therefore left the demigods, WHO THEN HAD NO PRIEST. HOWEVER, AT THE REQUEST OF THE DEMIGODS, VISVARUPA, THE SON OF THE BRAHMANA TVASTA, BECAME THEIR PRIEST.
Once upon a time, Indra, the King of the demigods, was sitting with his wife Sacidevi and being praised by various demigods like the Siddhas, Caranas and Gandharvas when Brhaspati, the spiritual master of the demigods, entered the assembly. Indra, being too absorbed in material opulence, forgot himself and did not respect Brhaspati, who thus became aware of Indra’s pride in his material opulence and immediately disappeared from the assembly to teach him a lesson. Indra became most repentant, understanding that because of his opulence he had forgotten to respect his spiritual master. He left the palace to beg pardon from his spiritual master, but could not find Brhaspati anywhere.
Because of his disrespectful behavior toward his spiritual master. Indra lost all his opulence and was conquered by the demons, who defeated the demigods in a great fight and occupied Indra’s throne. King Indra, along with the other demigods, later took shelter of Lord Brahma. Understanding the situation, Lord Brahma chastised the demigods for their offense to their spiritual master. Following Lord Brahma’s orders, the demigods accepted Visvarupa, who was a brahmana and the son of Tvasta, as their priest. Then they performed yajnas under the priesthood of Visvarupa and were able to conquer the demons.

SB 6.7.32 T Indra Offends His Spiritual Master, Brhaspati.
    vrnimahe tvopadhyayam
    brahmistham brahmanam gurum
    yathanjasa vijesyamah
    sapatnams tava tejasa

    SYNONYMS

vrnimahe–we choose; tva–you; upadhyayam–as teacher and spiritual master; brahmistham–being perfectly aware of the Supreme Brahman; brahmanam–a qualified brahmana; gurum–the perfect spiritual master; yatha–so that; anjasa–very easily; vijesyamah–we shall defeat; sapatnan–our rivals; tava–your; tejasa–by the power of austerity.

    TRANSLATION

Since you are completely aware of the Supreme Brahman, you are a perfect brahmana, and therefore you are the spiritual master of all orders of life. We accept you as our spiritual master and director so that by the power of your austerity we may easily defeat the enemies who have conquered us.

    PURPORT
ONE MUST APPROACH A PARTICULAR TYPE OF GURU TO EXECUTE A PARTICULAR TYPE OF DUTY. Therefore although Visvarupa was inferior to the demigods, the demigods accepted him as their guru to conquer the demons.

SB 7.5.31 P Prahlada Maharaja, the Saintly Son of Hiranyakasipu
Since there must always be a difference of opinion between demons and devotees, Hiranyakasipu, when criticized by his son Prahlada Maharaja, should not have been surprised that Prahlada Maharaja differed from his way of life. Nonetheless, Hiranyakasipu was extremely angry and wanted to rebuke his son for deriding his teacher or spiritual master, who had been born in the brahmana family of the great acarya Sukracarya. The word sukra means “semen,” and acarya refers to a teacher or guru. HEREDITARY GURUS, OR SPIRITUAL MASTERS, HAVE BEEN ACCEPTED EVERYWHERE SINCE TIME IMMEMORIAL, BUT PRAHLADA MAHARAJA DECLINED TO ACCEPT SUCH A SEMINAL GURU OR TAKE INSTRUCTION FROM HIM. An actual guru is srotriya, one who has heard or received perfect knowledge through parampara, the disciplic succession. Therefore Prahlada Maharaja did not recognize a seminal spiritual master. Such spiritual masters are not at all interested in Visnu. Indeed, they are hopeful of material success (bahir-artha-maninah). The word bahih means “external,” artha means “interest,” and manina means “taking very seriously.” Generally speaking, practically everyone is unaware of the spiritual world. The knowledge of the materialists is restricted within the four-billion-mile limit of this material world, which is in the dark portion of the creation; they do not know that beyond the material world is the spiritual world. Unless one is a devotee of the Lord, one cannot understand the existence of the spiritual world. Gurus, teachers, who are simply interested in this material world are described in this verse as andha, blind. Such blind men may lead many other blind followers without true knowledge of material conditions, but they are not accepted by devotees like Prahlada Maharaja. Such blind teachers, being interested in the external, material world, are always bound by the strong ropes of material nature.

SB 5.5.18 P Lord Rsabhadeva’ s Teachings to His Sons
WE HAVE MANY INSTANCES IN HISTORY ILLUSTRATING RSABHADEVA’S INSTRUCTIONS. SUKRACARYA WAS REJECTED BY BALI MAHARAJA DUE TO HIS INABILITY TO SAVE BALI MAHARAJA FROM THE PATH OF REPEATED BIRTH AND DEATH. SUKRACARYA WAS NOT A PURE DEVOTEE, HE WAS MORE OR LESS INCLINED TO FRUITIVE ACTIVITY, and he objected when Bali Maharaja promised to give everything to Lord Visnu. Actually one is supposed to give everything to the Lord because everything belongs to the Lord.

NoD 8 Offenses to Be Avoided
The offenses against the chanting of the holy name are as follows: (3) To disobey the orders of the spiritual master.

Madhya 24.330 The Sixty-One Explanations of the Atmarama Verse
    MAHA-BHAGAVATA-srestho
    brahmano vai gurur nrnam
    sarvesam eva lokanam
    asau pujyo yatha harih

    maha-kula-prasuto ‘pi
    sarva-yajnesu DIKSITAH
    sahasra-sakhadhyayi ca
    na guruh syad avaisnavah

((The guru MUST be situated on the topmost platform of devotional service. There are three classes of devotees, and the guru MUST be accepted from the topmost class. The first-class devotee is the spiritual master for all kinds of people. ….When one has attained the topmost position of MAHA-BHAGAVATA, he is to be accepted as a guru and worshiped exactly like Hari, the Personality of Godhead. Only such a person is eligible to occupy the post of a guru.))

Note The word DIKSITAH refers to Diksa and ONLY Maha Bhagavata is the one mentioned WHO give this BY DEFINITION.

  4. In the Purport of SB. 6.7.32 verse, HDG. Srila Prabhupada expalins ;

” One must approach a particular type of guru to execute a particular type of duty. Therefore although Visvarupa was inferior to the demigods, the demigods accepted him as their guru to conquer the demons. ”

I find the above said explanation very significant in context with various gradation of Gurus under the modes of material nature. Therefore, one can understand the position of the Demigods Guru Shri Brishpati and the Demons Guru Shri Sukraacaraya as noted in the comments of Mahesh Raja Prabhu.

Shri Bhismadeva, who is considered the best amongst the eight Vasus and one of the great Mahajana lying on a bed of arrows, about to pass away also serves the best example as one of such Spiritual Master giving Instructions to Maharaja Yudhisthira.

Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu approved of this when He expressed this opinion before Ramananda Raya (Cc. Madhya 8.128):

kiba vipra, kiba nyasi, sudra kene naya
    yei krsna-tattva-vetta, sei ‘guru’ haya

It does not matter whether one is a brahmana, sudra, grhastha or sannyasi. These are all material designations. A spiritually advanced person has nothing to do with such designations. Therefore, if one is advanced in the science of Krsna consciousness, regardless of his position in human society, he may become a spiritual master.

Certainly, the Diksha Guru is on the topmost platform of devotional service as per Madhya 24.330 The Sixty-One Explanations of the Atmarama Verse MAHA-BHAGAVATA-srestho ……. as described by Shriman Mahesh Raja Prabhu in his comments mentioned above.

    Hari BOL.

    All Glories to Srila Prabhupada.
