Even though Bhagavad-gita and Srimad Bhagavatam were spoken and recorded in 3,000 B.C., it wasn’t until 1965 A.D., 5,000 years later, that these original sastras containing the Yuga Dharma were released from India by His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. Bhaktivinode Thakur had previously inaugurated the Hare Krsna Movement, the emblem of that Yuga Dharma, when he sent his Caitanya—His Life and Precepts to McGill University, Canada, in 1896. More copies of this sublime volume have been found in other countries, suggesting that the Thakur made an extensive mailing to the major English-speaking universities of his day.
From 1914, the son of Bhaktivinode, Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati, meditated upon how to execute his father’s order to go forward and fulfill his premonition that people from all over the world would chant and dance at Mayapur. It has been Lord Caitanya’s prediction that His Name would be known in every town and village of the world. To this end Srila Bhaktisiddhanta established 64 maths, large and small, mostly in Bengal, with the intention of training up Indians to preach in the West.
So it was at the very first meeting of Abhay Charan De, destined to become his principle disciple, that he admonished the educated young men present to prepare themselves for preaching in English in the West. It was Abhay Charan who would become A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami, the next Srila Prabhupada, and go not only to the English-speaking countries, but to people on every continent, where dozens of different languages were spoken. Who knew? Who could have known all this would happen? But one thing is noteworthy. In 1896, when Srila Prabhupada appeared, there were three giant Vaisnavas already present, namely Gour Kishore das Babji, Bhaktivinode Thakur and Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati. Bhaktivinode Thakur and Gour Kishore didn’t disappear until 1914 and 1915 respectively. By that time Abhay Charan De was approaching his 20th year. These four great personalities being present on Earth simultaneously clearly foretold a spiritual critical mass approaching in Lord Caitanya’s world-wide movement.
That critical mass was not to be reached in India, but far away, 10,000 miles away in “the land of voidism and impersonalism,” ruled not by Buddhist or Mayavada philosophy but by materialistic science and sectarian religion. From childhood, the Americans were taught that asking about the purpose of life was a meaningless question, that there was no proof of life after death or advanced life on other planets. Nature was running automatically, following laws that somehow evolved. The theory of evolution was taught in the schools as a law of nature. Those who believed in God had such a vague idea that love of God remained theoretical and practices ritualistic. Many thought reaching their heaven was guaranteed even if they remained sinful. It would take many pages to describe the complex society that awaited Srila Prabhupada’s arrival, but it was basically a frustrating time of “perhaps, maybe” futuristic science and the philosophy of life: “eat, drink and be merry for tomorrow we may die.”
That critical mass was reached in 1966, when Srila Prabhupada, then Swamiji, opened the door of his little rented storefront. At that moment the transcendental plane, like a bolt of lightening, intersected the mundane plane, igniting a chain reaction that continues around the world, burning to ashes the most cherished illusions of conditioned souls.
Comprehending how Srila Prabhupada acquired the benediction of spiritual potency he carried with him to America requires some historical review. Srila Prabhupada once explained that Lord Caitanya picked Srila Rupa Goswami because he was qualified to bear the burden of the responsibility of teaching the science of devotional service. He was fit. “Nana-sastra-vicaranaika-nilpunau sad-dharma-samsthapakau,” the Goswamis led by Rupa Goswami scrutinizingly studied the Vedic literatures to extract the essence of “Krsna Bhakti rasabhavamrta,” translated by Srila Prabhupada in his Nectar of Devotion as “Krsna consciousness.” In his turn, Srila Prabhupada studied the Six Goswamis and previous Acaryas, compiled the realizations of these great souls and included them in purports along with his own infallible wisdom – all in a way just suitable for the understanding of modern man.
The magnitude of Srila Prabhupada’s accomplishment must be viewed on the cosmic scale. Lord Krsna appears once only in a day of Lord Brahma, of 4,320,000 x 1,000 solar years, a period of time beyond human imagination. Although there are many hundreds of thousands of planets in this middle planetary system, Earth is the planet where Lord Krsna Himself appears to display His eternal pastimes, not elsewhere. 4,320,000 solar years equals one cycle of four yugas, and in each yuga there appears a Yuga Avatar to teach the Yuga Dharma. The Yuga Avatar is white in Satya, red in Treta, syama (dark blue) in Dvapara and blackish in Kali. The Kali-yuga Avatar is usually blackish, “but in special cases pita (yellow) as Caitanya Mahaprabhu in the Kali-yuga (Caitanya-caritamrta Madhya 20.246 purport).
Out of the four bona fide Vaisnava Sampradayas, Lord Caitanya chose to appear in the Brahma-Madhva Sampradaya. Why He did so can be surmised from the following explanations in the Caitanya-caritamrta:
“Srila Bhaktisiddhanta remarks that in the disciplic succession of Madhvacarya – up to the advent of His Holiness Sripada Laksmipati Tirtha – only Lord Krsna was worshipped. After Srila Madhavendra Puri worship of both Radha and Krsna was established. For this reason Sri Madhavendra Puri is accepted as the root of worship in ecstatic love. Unless one is connected to the disciplic succession of Madhavendra Puri, there is no possibility of awakening the symptoms of ecstatic love.” (Caitanya-caritamrta Madhya 9.289 purport) “The process of worship in the disciplic succession of Madhvacarya was full of ritualistic ceremonies, with hardly a sign of love of Godhead; Sri Madhavendra Puri was the first person in the disciplic succession to exhibit symptoms of love of Godhead.” (Caitanya-caritamrta Adi 9.10 purport)
“Out of the four sampradayas, Sri Madhva Sampradaya was accepted by Madhavendra Puri. Beginning from Madhvacarya down to the spiritual master of Madhavendra Puri… there was no realization of devotional service in conjugal love. Sri Madhavendra Puri introduced the conception of conjugal love for the first time in the Madhavacarya Sampradaya…” (Caitanya-caritamrta Madhya 4.197 purport)
Now according to the symptoms of Kali-yuga described in the Srimad Bhagavatam, things are degrading very quickly, considering only 5,000 years have passed out of 432,000 total. Fifty or sixty years ago abortion was criminal, rape was a capital offense, gambling was restricted to special locations, pornography and cursing in the media was forbidden and strictly monitored by government agencies, child abuse was rarely in the news, and “serial killers”, “home invasions”, and organized international terrorism were unheard of. Could it be that Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu’s appearance in this particular Kali-yuga signals it to be especially pernicious? Winter is winter, but some winters are severe.
Be that as it may, still we are most fortunate to be here now, so close in time to Lord Krsna and Lord Caitanya’s appearances. Close enough to guarantee that Their spoken words and pastimes would be passed on in our disciplic succession without change in meaning, as epitomized by Srila Prabhupada’s teachings. After all, there are innumerable living entities, spirit-souls, persons like us but in different dresses all around us, yet we find ourselves in human form, born at the right time and the right place to obtain Srila Prabhupada’s mercy. Our reciprocation, our mission is simple: pass it on as it is. Srila Prabhupada said, “I am the tenth Acarya in line from Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu and you are next.”
Although not officially accepted by other Vaisnava sampradayas, Lord Caitanya is confirmed as “Krsna-varnam”, the same category or division as Krsna Himself (Srimad Bhagavatam 11.5.32). Lord Caitanya’s characteristic and mission is confirmed in numerous sastras, including the Arthava Veda, Sama Veda, Mundaka Upanisad, Garuda Purana, Nrisimha Purana, Ananta-samhita, Brahmayama, Kulanava Tantra, et al. For example, in the Devi Purana it is said: “The Supreme Personality will appear again in this world. His name will be Krsna Caitanya and He will spread the chanting of the Lord’s holy names.” And in the Padma Purana it is stated, “In the 1st Sandhya of Kali-yuga I will appear on Earth in a beautiful place by Ganges’ shores. I will be the son of Saci-devi and my complexion will be golden.”
So by appearing in the Brahma-Madhava Sampradaya, teaching and demonstrating the highest conceptions of God and love of God, Lord Krsna Caitanya, the Supreme Personality of Godhead Himself, made the succeeding Acaryas in that line the highest authorities on the Science of God. As Srila Prabhupada remarked about Lord Krsna’s Gita, “Nobody can explain God better than God Himself.” The same holds true for Lord Caitanya’s instructions as recorded by His exalted followers such as the Six Goswamis and Krsnadas Kaviraj and perfectly translated and explained by Srila Prabhupada.
The Gaudiya Vaisnava Sampradaya, therefore, presents the summum bonum, the ultimate siddhanta and realization of the Absolute Personality of Godhead – beyond that of other sampradayas, what to speak of sectarian religions of the day – as exemplified by the concept of “inconceivably simultaneously one and different.” Because Srila Prabhupada became the topmost preacher in the sampradaya in which Caitanya Mahaprabhu taught, he is qualified to be Acarya of all Vaisnavas in whichever sampradaya or community they may be. There is simply no higher Vaisnava siddhanta than Srila Prabhupada has already preached around the world, purporting exactly what Lord Caitanya and the Goswamis taught without changing the meaning, at all. Therefore, Srila Prabhupada is everyone’s Acarya, a true universal Acarya, and actually the world Acarya beyond any doubt. Srila Bhaktisiddhanta and Bhaktivinode Thakur are also World Acaryas, teachers of everyone. But it is through Srila Prabhupada that these greatest of souls have acted in a missionary spirit, that same missionary spirit of Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu. They are teaching through Srila Prabhupada, their perfect transparent medium and they must be understood through him, not directly. That is the meaning of parampara, one cannot jump over to a previous Acarya for understanding.
For example, when asked whether his disciples could translate and publish the writings of other previous Acaryas after his disappearance, Srila Prabhupada replied, “A realized soul, must be. Otherwise, simply imitating A-B-C-D will not help. My purports are liked by people because it is presented as practical experience… Our translation must be document. They are not ordinary… One cannot become unless one is very realized. It is not A-B-C-D translation.” (May 28, 1977, Vrindavan). In other words, Srila Prabhupada is giving permission for a disciple who has first fully realized his teachings, not simply theoretically or grammatically. Such a fully realized soul would be competent to translate previous Acaryas.
Recent history has demonstrated Srila Prabhupada to be by far the greatest exponent of Lord Caitanya’s teachings, who freed them, carried them from the Indian sub-continent to the rest of the world. It is said that Nityananda Prabhu plundered the storehouse of love of God when preaching in Bengal by the order of Caitanya Mahaprabhu. 477 years later Srila Prabhupada again plundered that storehouse, only to return with the treasure to India to distribute it once again! These feats are impossible to duplicate. They have already changed the course of history.
In 1972, Sridham Mayapur, after a morning lecture all the assembled devotees were paying their obeisances to Srila Prabhupada. One old Bengali gentleman stood up, and leaning on his cane he spoke up loudly, “Save the whole world Prabhupada. Prabhupada save the whole world!” Yes! And in due time, people will understand the true meaning of “Prabhupada” – the Master (Prabhu) at whose lotus feet (pada) all others pay their obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada…

Rupanuga das: Srila Prabhupada said the following during his arrival address at the Los Angeles Temple on May 5, 1972:
“So we have got this message from Krsna, from Caitanya Mahaprabhu, from the Six Goswamis; later on Bhaktivinode Thakur, Bhaktisiddhanta Thakur. And we are trying our bit to distribute this knowledge. Now tenth, eleventh, twelfth; my Guru Maharaj is the tenth from Caitanya Mahaprabhu, I am eleventh, you are twelfth.”
In the article, this last sentence was paraphrased from memory, but the meaning is still the same as Srila Prabhupada’s statement, which now becomes enhanced when taken in the context of his speech. He is obviously referring to his present disciples as the next in the disciplic succession he has just named and numbered, all of whom are directly initiating their own disciples.

Regarding parampara system: THERE IS NOTHING TO WONDER FOR BIG GAPS. Just like we belong to the Brahma Sampradaya, so we accept it from Krishna to Brahma, Brahma to Narada, Narada to Vyasadeva, Vyasadeva to Madhva, and between Vyasadeva and Madhva there is a big gap. But it is sometimes said that Vyasadeva is still living, and Madhva was fortunate enough to meet him directly. In a similar way, we find in the Bhagavad-gita that the Gita was taught to the sungod, some millions of years ago, but Krishna has mentioned only three names in this parampara system–namely, Vivasvan, Manu, and Iksvaku; and so these gaps do not hamper from understanding the parampara system. WE HAVE TO PICK UP THE PROMINENT ACARYA, AND FOLLOW FROM HIM. There are many branches also from the parampara system, and it is not possible to record all the branches and sub-branches in the disciplic succession. We have to pick up from the authority of the acharya in whatever sampradaya we belong to.

“Iskcon is the asrama of Srila Prabhupada. All of Iskcon. There was no reason for Srila Prabhupada to name anyone to be an Initiating Spiritual master who initiates disciples on their own behalf, because there is no need for any devotee to make changes to the standard sadhana within Iskcon. The spiritual master must not be subjected to the advice of a disciple, nor should a spiritual master be obliged to take instructions from those who are not his disciples. This is the sum and substance of Srila Rupa Gosvami’s advice in the sixth verse.”

Now, granted, a temple president still has the free will to decide to change standards. But they will have a lot harder time convincing devotees that they have the authority to do so, when they have already acknowledged that they are only Siksa gurus beholden to follow the Founder’s siksa, and that all devotees in the society are initiated disciples of the Founder.
As you can see, when you have 50 people claiming to be uttama liberated Diksa Gurus, divinely authorized to change standards for their “own disciples”, they have a lot more space to argue and defend their position to change the standards of Iskcon “in their own area”.
And then you have the mess we have today.

Because we are attached to our this so-called family, society, friendship and love… When Arjuna was faced, then he became krpaya parayavisto visidann idam abravit. “How it is possible, Krsna, that I have to kill the other side, my fathers, my father-in-law, my grandfather, my sons, my grandsons, my brother, my so many friends?” So it is natural. Krpaya paraya avistah. He becomes overwhelmed with compassion. Krpaya parayavisto visidan. Very morosely. “Oh, Krsna, I will have to fight with them. I will have to kill them.” Why this consciousness came? The other side also, Duryodhana, why he did not think in that way? Why Arjuna is thinking? Because he is devotee. That is the difference. A devotee thinks like that. A devotee does not like to kill anyone, even an ant. Why he should be encouraged to kill his friends? A devotee is like that. Vidura was astonished to see the marvelous departure of his brother Dhrtarastra as a liberated yogi, for in his past life he was much attached to materialism. Of course it was only due to Vidura that his brother attained the desirable goal of life. Vidura was therefore glad to learn about it. BUT HE WAS SORRY THAT HE COULD NOT MAKE HIS BROTHER TURN INTO A PURE DEVOTEE. THIS WAS NOT DONE BY VIDURA BECAUSE OF DHRTARASTRA’S BEING INIMICAL TO THE PANDAVAS, WHO WERE ALL DEVOTEES OF THE LORD. AN OFFENSE AT THE FEET OF A VAISNAVA IS MORE DANGEROUS THAN AN OFFENSE AT THE LOTUS FEET OF THE LORD. VIDURA WAS CERTAINLY VERY LIBERAL TO BESTOW MERCY UPON HIS BROTHER DHRTARASTRA, WHOSE PAST LIFE WAS VERY MATERIALISTIC. BUT ULTIMATELY THE RESULT OF SUCH MERCY CERTAINLY DEPENDED ON THE WILL OF THE SUPREME LORD IN THE PRESENT LIFE; THEREFORE DHRTARASTRA ATTAINED LIBERATION ONLY, AND AFTER MANY SUCH LIBERATED STATES OF LIFE ONE CAN ATTAIN TO THE STAGE OF DEVOTIONAL SERVICE. Vidura was certainly very mortified by the death of his brother and sister-in-law, and the only remedy to mitigate such lamentation was to go out to pilgrimage. Thus Maharaja Yudhisthira had no chance to call back Vidura, his surviving uncle.

When the Lord came, He was pleased with everyone; therefore it is stated here, krtsna-prasada-sumukham. The Lord knew that even the offensive doormen were His pure devotees, although by chance they committed an offense at the feet of other devotees. To commit an offense against a devotee is very dangerous in devotional service. LORD CAITANYA THEREFORE SAID THAT AN OFFENSE TO A DEVOTEE IS JUST LIKE A MAD ELEPHANT RUN LOOSE; WHEN A MAD ELEPHANT ENTERS A GARDEN, IT TRAMPLES ALL THE PLANTS. SB 7.4.28 P Hiranyakasipu Terrorizes the Universe
Of all sinful activities, an offense to a pure devotee, or Vaisnava, is the most severe. An offense at the lotus feet of a Vaisnava is so disastrous that Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu has compared it to a mad elephant that enters a garden and causes great havoc by uprooting many plants and trees. If one is an offender at the lotus feet of a brahmana or Vaisnava, his offenses uproot all his auspicious activities. One should therefore very carefully guard against committing vaisnava-aparadha, or offenses at the lotus feet of a Vaisnava. Here the Lord clearly says that although Hiranyakasipu had received benedictions from Lord Brahma, these benedictions would be null and void as soon as he committed an offense at the lotus feet of Prahlada Maharaja, his own son. A Vaisnava like Prahlada Maharaja is described herein as nirvaira, having no enemies. Elsewhere in Srimad-Bhagavatam (3.25.21) it is said, ajata-satravah santah sadhavah sadhu-bhusanah: a devotee has no enemies, he is peaceful, he abides by the scriptures, and all his characteristics are sublime. A DEVOTEE DOES NOT CREATE ENMITY WITH ANYONE, BUT IF SOMEONE BECOMES HIS ENEMY, THAT PERSON WILL BE VANQUISHED BY THE SUPREME PERSONALITY OF GODHEAD, DESPITE WHATEVER BENEDICTIONS HE MAY HAVE RECEIVED FROM OTHER SOURCES. HIRANYAKASIPU WAS CERTAINLY ENJOYING THE FRUITFUL RESULTS OF HIS AUSTERITIES, BUT HERE THE LORD SAYS THAT AS SOON AS HE COMMITTED AN OFFENSE AT THE LOTUS FEET OF PRAHLADA MAHARAJA HE WOULD BE RUINED. ONE’S LONGEVITY, OPULENCE, BEAUTY, EDUCATION AND WHATEVER ELSE ONE MAY POSSESS AS A RESULT OF PIOUS ACTIVITIES CANNOT PROTECT ONE IF ONE COMMITS AN OFFENSE AT THE LOTUS FEET OF A VAISNAVA. DESPITE WHATEVER ONE POSSESSES, IF ONE OFFENDS THE LOTUS FEET OF A VAISNAVA HE WILL BE VANQUISHED.

SYNONYMS
are–O; papi–you sinful person; bhakta-dvesi–envious of devotees; tore–you; na uddharimu–I shall not deliver; koti-janma–for ten million births; ei mate–in this way; kidaya–by the germs; khaoyaimu–I shall cause you to be bitten.
TRANSLATION
“O sinful person, envious of pure devotees, I shall not deliver you! Rather, I shall have you bitten by these germs for many millions of years.
PURPORT
We should note herein that all our sufferings in this material world, especially from disease, are due to our past sinful activities. And of all sinful activities, actions directed against a pure devotee out of sheer envy are considered extremely severe. Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu wanted Gopala Capala to understand the cause of his suffering. ANY PERSON WHO DISTURBS A PURE DEVOTEE ENGAGED IN BROADCASTING THE HOLY NAME OF THE LORD IS CERTAINLY PUNISHED LIKE GOPALA CAPALA. This is the instruction of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu. As we shall see, one who offends a pure devotee can never satisfy Caitanya Mahaprabhu unless and until he sincerely regrets his offense and thus rectifies it.

Lord Krsna continued: “If some foolish king who is puffed up by his wealth, prestige and power wants to usurp a brahmana’s property, it should be understood that such a king is clearing his path to hell; he does not know how much he has to suffer for such unwise action. If someone takes away the property of a very liberal brahmana who is encumbered by a large dependent family, then such a usurper is put into the hell known as Kumbhipaka; not only is he put into this hell, but his family members also have to accept such a miserable condition of life. A PERSON WHO TAKES AWAY PROPERTY WHICH HAS EITHER BEEN AWARDED TO A BRAHMANA OR GIVEN AWAY BY HIM IS CONDEMNED TO LIVE FOR AT LEAST 60,000 YEARS AS MISERABLY AS AN INSECT IN STOOL. Therefore I instruct you, all My boys and relatives present here, do not, even by mistake, take the possession of a brahmana and thereby pollute your whole family. IF SOMEONE EVEN WISHES TO POSSESS SUCH PROPERTY, LET ALONE ATTEMPTS TO TAKE IT AWAY BY FORCE, THE DURATION OF HIS LIFE WILL BE REDUCED. HE WILL BE DEFEATED BY HIS ENEMIES, AND AFTER BEING BEREFT OF HIS ROYAL POSITION, WHEN HE GIVES UP HIS BODY HE WILL BECOME A SERPENT. A serpant gives trouble to all other living entities. My dear boys and relatives, I therefore advise you that even if a brahmana becomes angry with you and calls you by ill names or cuts you, still you should not retaliate. On the contrary, you should smile, tolerate him and offer your respects to the brahmana. You know very well that even I Myself offer My obeisances to the brahmanas with great respect three times daily. You should therefore follow My instruction and example. I shall not forgive anyone who does not follow them, and I shall punish him. You should learn from the example of King Nrga that even if someone unknowingly usurps the property of a brahmana, he is put into a miserable condition of life.”

Please accept my humble obeisance’s. All glories to Srila Prabhupada.
The following is the most accurate information about Mayapur that I’ve encountered on the net. The sender wishes to remain anonymous but this is quite factual since I know most of the ‘players’ involved.
Bhavananda and Pragosh were trying to kick out all the Bengali managers and
so there was a fight. Bhavananda kicked out Radha Jivan as he opposed him
and the GBC’s ideas, as do many India Leaders.
It seems that Bhavananda, Hansarupa and Pragosh left Mayapur but Braja
Sevaki DD was going to Radha Jivan in her angry mood and ladies were
positioned at the door to stop her but she never reached and it seems some
Bengali devotee men roughed her up a bit.
Bengali Shyamasundar told me the Bengali devotees from outside, from
management and brahmacaris are against the new management, not all
westerners. New management are getting salaries of 60000 to 75000 rupees
per month will all expenses including overseas trips paid and they are on
tourist visas. No investigation from Hansarupa, who by the way told the
IIAC body that he and Pragosh Prabhu decide who to investigate and who not
too.
No doubt there are problems with devotees conflict of interest, and
profiteering for themselves. But it is a long history and in the old days
they were encouraged by Harikesh and others to do just that. The Ethical
Standards Compliance Office under Pragosh and Hansarupa are using their
position and power to get out devotees they see as an obstruction to their
plans. In fact when we were doing the investigation into conflict of
interest against Naru Gopal Hansarupa told us that he was just a small fry
and their real target was B P Swami, Dayaram and JPS.
So another side to the story: In our estimation Naru Gopal and these others
like Aloy Govinda, Nitai Naresh are not criminals but they are devotees and
there is a conflict to interest which needs to be dealt with as devotees but
this high handed mentality that ESCO has is causing huge pressure between
foreigners and Indians. Their idea is just kick them out of ISKCON.
ESCO said that Aloy Govinda is illegal alien from Bangladesh, is a thief and
so many claims but Aloy Govinda is no fool so he fought back. In the end
Pragosh and Hansarupa had to apologize as it was all found untrue. Aloy has
made a lot of money building apartments and no doubt got land cheap from the
land department but he did a lot of service. When Bhavananda and Ambarish
went to the Tourism Minister with their proposal for development, the Chief
Minister got upset that they did not approach directly and sent government
men to Mayapur to find out if we are breaking the land ceiling. In that
there were many cases vested against ISKCON and it was only Aloy Govinda who
went to the court everyday on our behalf and got all those vesting’s
cancelled and saved our land, even while ESCO were calling him a criminal.
So as Badrinarayan Swami says maybe Lord Caitanya is cleaning up Mayapur for
the 50th anniversary and maybe some of those who need to be cleaned up are
from both sides, we shall watch and see. What Radhanath Swami says is
Mayapur should be managed by a joint team of GBC and India Leaders and let’s
hope they discuss something like this.
More as it develops but rest assured this is Srila Prabhupda’s Iskcon and he along with Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu will do the needful to make it last for the next 10,000 years.
