Hare Krsna Prabhu,
Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada,
Many times I’ve tried to convince a meat eater that eating animals is: unhealthy, unkind, unnecessary, unnatural, uneconomical and an impediment to spiritual life. And yet, invariably even if I present facts, anecdotes and prasadam to back up my claims that not eating animals is a superior choice, still most meat eaters continue their carnivorous ways. Apparently the Illusory Energy has a mechanism that causes people to be unable to hear or assimilate any facts that are contrary to what they want to believe. They like eating meat, don’t want to be that socially awkward “vegetarian” or are too lazy to make the effort to avoid meat, and so they are unable to hear the truth.
Are devotees immune to this mechanism of the Illusory Energy? Are devotees sometimes unable to hear truth if that truth challenges deeply ingrained beliefs?
Devotees are fortunate to have a guide to help them determine what is true and what is illusion. We have Srila Prabhupada in the form of his books and instructions. All we have to do, if we want to be able to hear the truth is to accept Srila Prabhupada’s words as being sacred, above all other claims.
If we hear a claim that is questionable, it is a simple matter of checking with Srila Prabhupada to determine the truth. For instance, if someone claims to have gone to the Moon in a rocket and Srila Prabhupada tells us that it is impossible to get to the Moon in that way, all we have to do to know the truth is to accept Srila Prabhupada. He is our source of truth and the belief in his words is the only belief that we need.
So what if we hear the outrageous claim that Srila Prabhupada was poisoned? First we ask, who made such a claim? Interestingly we find that Srila Prabhupada himself first brought up the subject. Here is a transcription of one of the conversations that Srila Prabhupada had about the possibility he was being poisoned:
Kaviraja: (Hindi) Ye apki darshan ke liye Balaramji Misra. Aap jante hai inko? Caitanya Mahaprabhu ke…
Trans: Here is Balaram Misra come to see you. Do you know him? (He) is from Caitanya Mahaprabhu’s…

Balaram Misra: Hmm?

Trans: What are you saying?
SP: (Hindi) Koi bolta hai je koi poison deya hai.
Trans: Someone says that somebody has given (me) poison.
Kaviraja: Kisko?
Trans: (to) Whom?
SP: Mujhko.
Trans: (to) Me.
Kaviraja: Kaun bolta hai?
Trans: Who is saying?
SP: Ye saab friends.
Trans: All these friends.
Bhakticaru: (Bengali) Ke boleche Srila Prabhupada?
Trans: Who said, Srila Prabhupada?
SP: Ke boleche.
Trans: Someone said.
Tamal Krsna: Krsna das?
Kaviraja: (Hindi) Aapko kaun poison dega? Kisleye dega?
Trans: Who will give you poison? For what/why?
Tamala Krsna: (English) Who said that, Srila Prabhupada?
SP: (English) I do not know, but it is said…(whispers). (Conch).
Although the GBC has declined to fully investigate Srila Prabhupada’s concerns about being poisoned, some devotees did have some hair samples analyzed by a new atomic method. These hair samples had been abandoned by the GBC at a lab when the GBC was unwilling to pay for the analysis, so some devotees, on their own initiative and at their own expense had the lab send the samples directly to the atomic testing lab. The results confirmed Srila Prabhupada’s belief that he was being poisoned showing that his hair contained 250 times the normal amount of cadmium, an amount impossible to occur through any natural exposure, even in cadmium battery factories, according to 9 experts who were consulted regarding the test results.
The GBCs response to this information: “there is no evidence at all that Srila Prabhupada was poisoned,” Bir Krsna Maharaja.
Who do you believe, Srila Prabhupada or the GBC?
Please continue to write me with your questions and response. And thank you to those who have offered their support and assistance in bringing the truth to light.
