Srila Prabhupada orders Balaram das
to perform Ritvik initiation on His behalf.
Balaram das: “I still have his original letters from Srila Prabhupada requesting me to perform the yajna formalities for his new disciples.”
Srila Prabhupada: My Dear Balaram das, Please accept my blessings.
Now hold a fire yajna and present the names at that time. The gayatri mantras may be heard by tape through the right ear. The beads are duly chanted upon and are enclosed within along with one brahmana thread. The names are, for Bhakta Farmer– Vrajaraja dasa, and for Bhakta Ted– Tribhuvanapati dasa. Jyotir Maya das has been accepted by me for second initiation.
All of our initiated devotees must strictly chant 16 rounds a day and avoid the four pillars of sinful life completely. These four regulative principles should be lectured on by some expert speaker, as well as the ten offenses to the holy name. The brahmana must possess the qualities mentioned in the Bhagavad-gita (18.42) and take bath at least twice a day to maintain external cleanliness as well as always chanting the maha mantra for internal cleanliness. (Letter– Sep. 11, 1976 )
Srila Prabhupada: My dear Balaram, Please accept my blessings.
Upon your recommendation I am pleased to accept the following devotees as my initiated disciples. Now hold a fire sacrifice and instruct the first initiates to always follow the four regulative principles and chant a minimum of 16 rounds daily avoiding the ten offenses. Let the second initiate hear the tape of me chanting Gayatri in the right ear. Show him how to count on the finger divisions. Their beads and thread have been duly sanctified by me.
Bhakta Andre – Atmarama dasa
Edward R. Byrne – Brhaspati dasa
Heajther Abbot – Hari dasi
second initiation – Visvahetu dasa
Hoping this will meet you in good health.
Your ever well-wisher,
A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami

Balaram das: “I received initiation directly from Srila Prabhupada in Feb 1973 and served as his ritvik representative from ’75 until his vapu departure by recommending initiates to him for 1st & 2nd initiations as temple president. I still have his original letters requesting me to perform yajna formalities for his new disciples. My regret is that during the 80s as TP, I supported the ‘zonal mafia system’ until I resigned in 89,due to disallusionment with gbc & guroo ‘falldowns’. I was fortunate to receive a manuscript-type copy of Krsna Kant prabhu’s ‘The Final Order’ in ’96, not knowing how they even had my address. I dismissed it at first, thinking just another bogus off-shoot, but after a short time the REALITY of the offense against His Divine Grace became very clear.
If that system as he ordained was still in place, ISKCON would certainly be a wonderful society, as opposed to the fabricating, cheating & corruption etc that we see today from the top down.
The leaders, both Indian & ‘western’ must be held accountable for the 2 great offenses to His Divine Grace, ie:
- Stealing his disciples & daksine by not following his final order… (my disciples >> you are ritvik only).
- Changing the written words of his translations and even his Bhaktivedanta Purports.
I’m attaching several Ritvik ‘initiation’ letters from Srila Prabhupada and also a few others that should be of interest. (Prabhupada-Letters-Balaram.pdf)
Apart from these, Srila Prabhupada personally performed the initiation ceremonies during his visits to Melbourne Radha Vallabha Mandir in 1975 & 1976. He used to come after the Mayapur-Vrindavan Festival each year, however of course he was too unwell after the 1977 Festival to make the long flight, so 1976 was his last visit.
Your humble street-sweeper servant,
Balaram das.
Thank-you very much! Balaram Prabhu for presenting this perfect evidence of the Ritvik System even at THAT time. What the need today is COOPERATION by devotees to bring this about. Problem however is the GREED of BIG SALARIES at the top:

Dear Balarama prabhu,
thank you for sharing these letters and for your respected understanding of Srila Prabhupadas instructions on initiation.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.
your servant
Sundarananda das
THANKYOU Sriman Balarama prabhu , PAMHO, AGTSP.
Due to your recommendation to Srila Prabhupada and by his order only a fire yajya was held and I became initiated into the Brahma Madva Gaudia sampradaya. By his grace only this wretched soul still endevers to follow his instruction today. ys bd.
The TP was the real lynch pin in the whole initiation process. If the bhakti/bhaktin would be recommended by the TP the as you can see below then Srila Prabhupada would accept them.
Jai Srila Prabhupada!!

My Dear Hamsaduta,
Please accept my blessings. I have received one letter from Mr. and Mrs. Levine who I suppose are living in the same building where you are living. It is understood from their letters that they are eager to be initiated. If they are prepared to follow the rules and regulations I think that they can be initiated by mail. So if you recommend you can ask them to send their beads and I shall initiate them.
Your ever well-wisher,

The beads referred to in your letter have not yet arrived. As you recommend this boy, Jim, so highly, surely I shall chant on them and send back to him. Last night we initiated here one dozen new devotees, both boys and girls, and they appear to be very, very nice. Last week also I initiated about seven devotees and installed the Radha-Krishna Murtis on the 16th of July.

My Dear Jaya Gopala,
Regarding Volcer marrying, for the time being they can be married by the civil court without delay. Both the husband and wife may be allowed to associate with you and after a few days, if you recommend for initiation, then you can send their beads and they will be initiated by post. At that time you can perform our regular wedding ceremony as usual. That will be nice. Uninitiated couples cannot be married by us. We shall not take the responsibility of an ordinary marriage maker. Our practice is to help devotees for advancing in Krishna Consciousness. In such activities, when there is necessity, we get them married also.

My Dear Ekayani,
I am so glad to learn that there are two very nice women devotees now coming to the Temple regularly, and please offer them by blessings for advancing in Krsna Consciousness. Take care of them nicely so that they may learn our program of Krsna Conscious life very nicely. Let them chant regularly and follow the four basic principles and they will become firm in their faith in Krsna. If you recommend, I shall initiate them, so you can send sets of new beads with their letters and some donation for the book fund. The standard form is that the initiate collects some alms by begging and offers it to the Spiritual Master as daksina or presentation.

My Dear Son, Visnujana Maharaja,
It is so much encouraging that you have got a very nice temple and that already there are six students living there and following the regulative principles. Anyone who you recommend, I shall immediately initiate him. So take advantage and enchant those who are coming by your chanting of Hare Krishna Mantra. You will be victorious. And try to introduce our books there and it will be a great missionary success. One Krishna book sold means we go forward one step in our Krishna Consciousness. We should always remember this. Now the second part of KRSNA book is available, so take them from Karandhara.

Dear Sahadeva
Please accept my blessings. I beg to acknowledge receipt of your letter dated January 11, 1974.
Regarding second initiations, I have become very concerned lately, that some of our older students who have been given the second initiation, have not been strictly following the rules and regulations. So from now on I want our presidents to be very sure about the devotees they are recommending to me for second initiation. I think sometimes in the past devotees have been recommended chiefly because some more helpers were required in maintaining the deity work. Of course, necessity is there. It is just like in government, the government has need for a number of men to fill important posts, but first the persons must be qualified before they can award the post. Even though there may be a pressing demand, first the man must be qualified. Our system is that after one year from the first initiation, if the devotee is strictly following our principles without deviation, and if he will sign a statement in seriousness, that he will not deviate from the chanting and regulative principles, then, on your mature consideration you can recommend him to me. It is not that we are stopping second initiation, but I want to be sure it does not become a farce and names be sent to me without proper qualification. We are criticizing the caste brahmanas for saying that the Americans and Europeans cannot be awarded brahmana initiation, because according to Vedic sastra, anyone who is properly trained up under a bona fide spiritual master, can become twice born. But if our brahmanas do not take their second initiation seriously, then we will be deserving of criticism. So on this basis, if your think the men you have recommended are still eligible, you can resubmit their names to me and I will accept them.
You have also submitted two names for first initiation. With this first initiation, we can more readily give them a chance. Provided they are enthusiastic and you observe they are following the devotional practices then you can submit their names. I have accepted the names submitted by your and their names are as follows:
Brent Chevaliar—
Clarice Sandoz—
You may hold a fire yajna for them and instruct them in avoiding the ten offenses to chanting Hare Krsna Mantra. So I am counting on your own example in these matters as the most effective method of instruction for all the devotees in you care in the Houston temple.

Somebody, after initiation he promises, “Yes, I shall follow these rules and regulations. I shall chant sixteen rounds,” before the fire, before the Deity, before the guru, and if he does not follow, then he is a cheater. What to speak of his becoming a Vaiṣṇava, he is a cheater. He breaks all his promises. Therefore after seeing, observing a person is doing everything, then say second initiation, or then he should not be recommended for second initiation unless the president and the other authorities see that he is doing nicely, he is following. Otherwise he should not be recommended. If he is recommended, that is also another cheating. If you know that this person is not following the rules and regulation, then why should you recommend him? Then it is another cheating. Viddhi-bhakti must be followed; otherwise it becomes sahajiyā. [break] …Kerala?

Prabhupāda: Otherwise they should not be initiated. It is simple thing. Let them go on chanting, taking prasādam; we have no (indistinct). But when they are to be initiated, they must follow. This is the clear (indistinct). If you don’t want to disturb them, let them come, chant, dance, take prasādam We have no objection. But don’t recommend them for initiation unless he agrees to the rules and regulations given by the spiritual master. Where is the wrong? Where is the difficulty? You can talk with him like that
Note: Srila Prabhupada:ON MY BEHALF
71-04-11. Letter: Bhagavan
Yes, the gayatri mantra initiations may be performed by you. Hold a fire ceremony and give the sacred thread ON MY BEHALF. I am enclosing herewith one thread, duly chanted on by me, along with a copy of gayatri mantra for Sri Govinda Das and mantra for his wife Srilekha Devi also. To each you should recite the mantra individually and they will repeat and then the thread should be offered to Sri Govinda Das. The tape recording is not required.
71-04-13. Letter: Karandhara
So far as Gayatri initiations are concerned, the tape is not required. You have the threads, chanted on by me and now I am enclosing herewith copies of Gayatri mantra, one for each of the seven disciples to be initiated. Hold a fire ceremony. Chant Gayatri mantra to them individually and let them hear and repeat. Then offer the threads ON MY BEHALF. The fire sacrifice should be performed as usual.
71-07-14. Letter: Makhanlal
Please accept my blessings. I am in due receipt of your letter undated and have noted the contents carefully. Yes, you have my blessings for the gayatri initiations of Jaya Deva Das Brahmacari and your wife Tilaka Devi Dasi. I am enclosing herewith a tape of the gayatri mantra chanted by me along with two copies of gayatri mantra and one sacred thread, duly chanted on by me, as well. The process should be that you let each of them hear the tape individually (through earphones). Show them how to chant on the fingers. Let them read the mantra and listen to the tape. Then, ON MY BEHALF you can present the sacred thread to Jaya Deva. Then hold a fire Yajna as you have seen done so many times before. If there are any questions about procedure, etc, you can consult with Karandhara and he will instruct you properly.
73-01-04.Rev Letter: Revatinandana
Please accept my blessings. Just now I have received some more requests for giving first initiation from Dhananjaya, and now I am receiving weekly not less than ten to fifteen such requests from new students. So it is becoming very expensive to send so many sets of beads such long distance, and it has become little bothersome for me also, so I think now you may be appointed by me to give first initiations to new disciples by chanting on their beads ON MY BEHALF. In America Kirtanananda Swami is doing that. So now if there are two of you that will give me great relief. Kirtanananda will chant on the beads for new devotees in America, Canada, like that, you can chant on the beads for the European continent new disciples. They shall, of course, still be considered as my disciples, not that they shall become your disciples, but you will be empowered by me to chant their beads and that is the same effect of binding master and disciple as if I were personally chanting. They may continue to send me their letters of request, along the President’s recommendation, and I shall give them name and it will be entered by my Secretary in our records, only I will send my letter of reply to you and you will purchase beads there and chant them and send, along with my letter to the new initiates. Is that all right?
I shall continue to deal with the matter of second initiations. The sacred threads do not require so much postage to send airmail.
73-01-05. Letter: Bhutatma
Please accept my blessings. I beg to acknowledge receipt of your letter dated December 18, 1972, forwarded to me here at Bombay. I am very happy to hear from you that everything is going nicely in the San Francisco temple. UPON YOUR RECOMMENDATION I am very glad to accept the six new students as my duly initiated disciples. Their letter is enclosed herewith. As for chanting on their beads, I have delegated Kirtanananda Swami to chant on the new devotees’ beads on my behalf in your country. In Europe, Revatinandana Swami will chant on the new devotees’ beads ON MY BEHALF. Because it is such long distance, therefore it is very expensive to send beads airmail from here, and there are so many instances of the beads being lost in that way. And I am getting now requests up to 20 or 30 each week, so it is practically becoming impossible for me to chant the beads when I am so far distant. Therefore the new devotees may send their beads to Kirtanananda in New Vrindaban, and he will chant the beads and send back to them. Is this all right?
Now hold the fire yajna and give also second initiation to Sarvadarsan, Yajnapati, and Hari Ballav. Enclosed please find three sacred threads, duly chanted by me, along with three copies of Gayatri mantra. Now hold the fire yajna for all nine devotees, and for the second initiates teach them how to chant on the finger divisions and play for them the tape of me reciting Gayatri mantra into their right ear.
73-01-05 Letter: Krsnakatha (Kris Carlson), Anala (Anna Carlson) Riddha (Roger May), Maharddhi
My dear Sons and Daughters,
Please accept my blessings. Upon the recommendation of Bahudak I have gladly accepted all of you as my duly initiated disciples. You may send your beads to Kirtanananda in New Vrindaban for chanting on them ON MY BEHALF. There is no difference if I chant them or he chants them, I have authorized him in that way. I have given you the spiritual names as follows:
Kris Carlson. KRSNAKATHA DAS ADHIKARI
Anna Carlson. ANALA DEVI DASI
Roger May. RIDDHA DAS
Morley Walkowski. MAHARDDHI DAS
Now my request to all of you is that you very seriously and sincerely stick to the principles of devotional service, and especially observe strictly the four prohibitions, and without fail always chant at least 16 rounds on your beads daily. In this way you will be always happy.
You have now got the golden opportunity of this human form of life, and it is not by accident that you have met your spiritual master, so if you are actually intelligent you will take advantage of Krsna’s blessings upon you and go back to home, back to Godhead. The essential point to remember is that by your activity you will please always your spiritual master. That means following the orders and instructions of your spiritual master, and my first instruction to all of my disciples is that they become Krsna conscious devotees themselves and help others to become devotees by spreading this Krsna Consciousness movement all over the world, utilizing their energy however they are best able to do it. In this way, if you keep yourselves always engaged in Krsna’s business 24 hours, then you will be freed from all attachment to maya, by Krsna’s grace. Just as when the darkness and the light come together, the darkness cannot stand before the light, so maya cannot remain in the presence of Krsna. Always remember therefore to chant Hare Krsna, and that will save you in all circumstances, without any doubt.
Balaram prabhu confirmed what can be easily missed. The naming of the first batch of representatives of the Acharya for matters only pertaining to the admission process(protocol) of formalization through initiation, which is within the jurisdiction of management, and not exactly as a way of spiritually connecting with Parampara, which is understood as to be through accepting of it’s principles ,according to spiritual lessons. “Connection with Parampara means,ACCEPTING the conclusions of Parampara”. Formal initiation entitles three things:The representative of the Acharya on matters of name giving and Gayatri chanting, and who have accepted the new disciple(he or her) on behalf of the initiating and spiritual preceptor Guru,Srila Prabhupada ,after receiving recommendation from the temple president, who will in turn perform the fire Yajna ceremony,to properly and officially formalize the connection of the new disciple with Srila Prabhupada. The so called gurus are absent from this picture, as far as claiming ownership over the new devotees, who are in actuality Srila Prabhupada’s disciples.
It’s interesting to note that Srila Prabhupada puts no emphasis on the need to see his physical in order to become a disciple.
Yes Prabhu, the process of sadhana Bhakti begins with ‘hearing’ (sravanam), chanting & remembering Krsna. No mention of ‘seeing’ as a pre-requisite for initiation, although we perfect the sense of sight by seeing the beautiful Deity form of Sri Sri Radha-Krsna.
In Srila Baladeva’s Govinda Bhasya and Prameya Ratnavali where he denotes the Guru Parampara from Krsna down to Lord Caitanya, there is a note that …
“Though there is a great gap of thousands of years between Badararayana (Vyasadev) and Madhva, yet the latter is said to be the disciple of the former. Once Madhvacarya and Sankaracharya were debating as to the truth of Vedanta doctrine, surrounded by thousands of sages at the Manikarnika Ghat, Benares. So absorbed were they in their disputations that they went on for days and nights without taking food or rest. Then all saw Sri Vyasadev manifest himself as blue as the sky, proclaiming that Madhva’s exposition was in accordance with His doctrine and not that of Sankara”
Srila Prabhupada also stated>>>
““Regarding parampara system: there is nothing to wonder for big gaps. Just like we belong to the Brahma Sampradaya, so we accept it from Krishna to Brahma, Brahma to Narada, Narada to Vyasadeva, Vyasadeva to Madhva, and between Vyasadeva and Madhva there is a big gap. But it is sometimes said that Vyasadeva is still living, and Madhva was fortunate enough to meet him directly. In a similar way, we find in the Bhagavad-gita that the Gita was taught to the sungod, some millions of years ago, but Krishna has mentioned only three names in this parampara system—namely, Vivasvan, Manu, and Iksvaku; and so these gaps do not hamper from understanding the parampara system. We have to pick up the prominent acaryas, and follow from him. There are many branches also from the parampara system, and it is not possible to record all the branches and sub-branches in the disciplic succession. We have to pick up from the authority of the acharya in whatever sampradaya we belong to.” Srila Prabhupada letter to: Dayananda — San Francisco , CA 12 April, 1968”

My Dear Bali Mardan,
Please accept my blessings. When I was in London I received your kind letter dated 28 November, 1969, but as there were many engagements regularly as well as there was installation ceremony on the 14th of December, I could not reply your letter sooner.
Now the MS of Krishna book as well as the pictures, it is not yet settled up where it is to be printed either in Japan or in our own press, but I have acknowledged the letter of Dai Nippon and the copy is enclosed.
I understand that you are now preparing for going to Australia, and I am so much glad that you are so enthusiastic in preaching the transcendental cult of Krishna Consciousness. Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu will be very much pleased upon you. Lord Caitanya desired that this cult of love for Krishna, which is the highest benefit for the living entity, shall be preached all over the world. As an intelligent boy you can understand how much this Krishna Consciousness Movement is necessary for the upliftment of the human society.
Due to their extraordinary materialistic way of life, the so called “civilized” human society has degraded to the position of the animals. They are now dancing naked on the public stage and so called “respectable” persons are going to enjoy such performances. The animals wander here and there naked, the monkeys walk naked; even the aborigines in the jungles they also cover their private parts by some skin or tree or leaf. I do not know how the so called “civilized” men are gliding to the stage of animal life and still they are proud of their advancement of education and civilization.
So the disease of the human society is becoming more and more acute and Lord Caitanya desired that the Indians should preach this cult for the benefit of the human society. Unfortunately, the present generation of Indians is more attracted to technological knowledge than this cult of Krishna Consciousness. Their position is very precarious.
Somehow or other, under the order of my Spiritual Master I have brought this cult of Krishna Consciousness and handed it over to the American boys and girls. So I am appealing to everyone, especially intelligent boys like you, to take up the propaganda work of Krishna Consciousness Movement very seriously, and it will be a great service to the human beings. We have got now sufficient books and literatures and our philosophy is super-excellent. We are authorized, and we shall go ahead more and more.
I hope this will find you in good health.

Hare Krsna Mataji,
Yes Bali-mardana arrived in Sydney early February 1970 and Upendra prabhu came a couple weeks later on 17th Feb.
Upendra was very attached to being Srila Prabhupada’s personal servant at the time, since coming back to that service after being TP of Seattle temple. But when Prabhupada gave him the look/stare that ‘you are going to Australia’, Upendra was trembling in his dhoti, as he said.. haha.
So that was the start of IsKcon Australia. When I joined in early 1972, Bali-mardana had left & Upendra, Mohanananda, Caru, Amogha & Dipak prabhus were the senior devotees at that time. Srila Prabhupada then sent Madhudvisa prabhu (then swami) to be GBC for Australia & New Zealand and he arrived in late May 1972. He was my inspiration to fully commit and receive Prabhupada’s mercy on his next visit for initiations.
