WHEN SOMETHING IS ARRANGED BY THE SUPREME PERSONALITY OF GODHEAD, ONE SHOULD NOT BE DISTURBED BY IT, EVEN IF IT APPEARS TO BE A REVERSE ACCORDING TO ONE’S CALCULATIONS. For example, sometimes we see that a powerful preacher is killed, or sometimes he is put into difficulty, just as Haridasa Thakura was. He was a great devotee who came into this material world to execute the will of the Lord by preaching the Lord’s glories. But Haridasa was punished at the hands of the Kazi by being beaten in twenty-two marketplaces. Similarly, Lord Jesus Christ was crucified, and Prahlada Maharaja was put through so many tribulations. The Pandavas, who were direct friends of Krsna, lost their kingdom, their wife was insulted, and they had to undergo many severe tribulations. SEEING ALL THESE REVERSES AFFECT DEVOTEES, ONE SHOULD NOT BE DISTURBED; ONE SHOULD SIMPLY UNDERSTAND THAT IN THESE MATTERS THERE MUST BE SOME PLAN OF THE SUPREME PERSONALITY OF GODHEAD. The Bhagavatam’s conclusion is that a devotee is never disturbed by such reverses. He accepts even reverse conditions as the grace of the Lord. One who continues to serve the Lord even in reverse conditions is assured that he will go back to Godhead, back to the Vaikuntha planets. Lord Brahma assured the demigods that there was no use in talking about how the disturbing situation of darkness was taking place, since the actual fact was that it was ordered by the Supreme Lord. Brahma knew this because he was a great devotee; it was possible for him to understand the plan of the Lord.

A sinful man who acts against the laws of nature must be punished, but sometimes he is given a chance to play, exactly like Hiranyakasipu when he was released from the hands of Nrsimhadeva. Hiranyakasipu was destined to be ultimately killed by Nrsimhadeva, but just to see the fun, the Lord gave him a chance to slip from His hands.

KB 4 Kamsa Begins His Persecutions
Thus being advised by the demoniac ministers, Kamsa, who was from the very beginning the greatest rascal, decided to persecute the brahmanas and Vaisnavas, being entrapped by the shackles of all-devouring, eternal time. He ordered the demons to harass all kinds of saintly persons, and then he entered his house. The adherents of Kamsa were all influenced by the modes of passion as well as illusioned by the modes of ignorance, and their only business was to create enmity with saintly persons. Such activities can only reduce the duration of life. The demons accelerated the process and invited their deaths as soon as possible. THE RESULT OF PERSECUTING SAINTLY PERSONS IS NOT ONLY UNTIMELY DEATH. THE ACT IS SO OFFENSIVE THAT THE ACTOR ALSO GRADUALLY LOSES HIS BEAUTY, HIS FAME AND HIS RELIGIOUS PRINCIPLES, AND HIS PROMOTION TO HIGHER PLANETS IS ALSO CHECKED. Driven by various kinds of mental concoctions, the demons diminish all kinds of welfare. An offense at the lotus feet of the devotees and brahmanas is a greater offense than that committed at the lotus feet of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Thus a godless civilization becomes the source of all calamities.

When a demon like Hiranyakasipu, despite his elevated position due to severe austerities, begins to tease a devotee, he begins falling down, and the results of his austerities dwindle. Such violators of religious principles have no respect for the authoritative acaryas, the holy teachers in the strict disciplic succession. THEY IGNORE THE VEDIC INJUNCTION ACARYOPASANA–“ONE MUST WORSHIP THE ACARYA”–and Krsna’s statement in the Bhagavad-gita (4.2) evam parampara-praptam, “This supreme science of God is received through the disciplic succession.” INSTEAD, TO MISLEAD THE PEOPLE IN GENERAL THEY THEMSELVES BECOME SO-CALLED ACARYAS, BUT THEY DO NOT EVEN FOLLOW THE PRINCIPLES OF THE ACARYAS.

Lord Krsna continued: “If some foolish king who is puffed up by his wealth, prestige and power wants to usurp a brahmana’s property, it should be understood that such a king is clearing his path to hell; he does not know how much he has to suffer for such unwise action. If someone takes away the property of a very liberal brahmana who is encumbered by a large dependent family, then such a usurper is put into the hell known as Kumbhipaka; not only is he put into this hell, but his family members also have to accept such a miserable condition of life. A PERSON WHO TAKES AWAY PROPERTY WHICH HAS EITHER BEEN AWARDED TO A BRAHMANA OR GIVEN AWAY BY HIM IS CONDEMNED TO LIVE FOR AT LEAST 60,000 YEARS AS MISERABLY AS AN INSECT IN STOOL. Therefore I instruct you, all My boys and relatives present here, do not, even by mistake, take the possession of a brahmana and thereby pollute your whole family. IF SOMEONE EVEN WISHES TO POSSESS SUCH PROPERTY, LET ALONE ATTEMPTS TO TAKE IT AWAY BY FORCE, THE DURATION OF HIS LIFE WILL BE REDUCED. On the contrary, you should smile, tolerate him and offer your respects to the brahmana. You know very well that even I Myself offer My obeisances to the brahmanas with great respect three times daily. You should therefore follow My instruction and example. I shall not forgive anyone who does not follow them, and I shall punish him. You should learn from the example of King Nrga that even if someone unknowingly usurps the property of a brahmana, he is put into a miserable condition of life.”

If you kill the cow, who is your mother, then in some future lifetime your mother will kill you. Yes. The mother becomes the child, and the child becomes the mother.Mam sa khadatiti mamsah. The Sanskrit word is mamsa. Mam means “me,” and sa means “he.” I am killing this animal; I am eating him. And in my next lifetime he’ll kill me and eat me. When the animal is sacrificed, this mantra is recited into the ear of the animal–“You are giving your life, so in your next life you will get the opportunity of becoming a human being. And I who am now killing you will become an animal, and you will kill me.” So after understanding this mantra, who will be ready to kill an animal?

So our business is like that. We are making big, big plans to be happy like the monkeys. Therefore here it is said that arthan samiheta nikama-kamah. So it is the duty of everyone to do something for his welfare. But here the beginning is lokah svayam sreyasi nasta-drstih: “These rascals, they are blind to their real interest.” Sreyas means real interest, and preyas means immediate profit. So nikama-kamah, sense gratification, is very nice immediately. “I enjoy sex life. This is very nice. Why shall I chant Hare Krsna? Let me enjoy sex.” Sreyasi. And preyasi: “This is pleasure.” And it is not pleasure; therefore nasta-drstih. He does not know that this sense pleasure is not his actual pleasure. It is creating different types of miserable conditions. Nasta-drstih. He has no eyes. Arthan samiheta nikama-kamah. Based on… He does not know, either it is legal sex or illegal sex. There are two kinds of sex life, legal and illegal. Legal is married life sex. That is taken as legal. And without marriage, like cats and dogs in the street or here and there, that is illegal. So legal sex life is still allowed. Just like Krsna says, dharmaviruddha-kamo ‘smi. If there is legal sex, one man and woman, married, and only for progeny they get into sex life, that is allowed in the sastra. But illegal, illicit sex is most abominable. But either illicit or legal, there are so many sufferings. So many sufferings. Illegal–now they are giving opportunity, abortion, killing the child, and so on, go to the hospital. That is also. And behind that, the killing the child, a very sinful, he has to suffer. He does not know. Ananta-duhkham ca na veda mudhah. HE’S TAKING THE RISK OF SUFFERING LIFE AFTER LIFE. THOSE WHO ARE KILLING THE CHILD WITHIN THE WOMB, THEY WILL BE PUNISHED. THEY WILL ALSO ENTER WITHIN THE WOMB OF THE MOTHER, AND SOMEBODY WILL KILL, AND AGAIN HE WILL ENTER ANOTHER MOTHER’S WOMB; AGAIN HE’LL BE KILLED. SO AS MANY CHILD HE HAS KILLED, HE HAS TO GO TO THE WOMB OF THE MOTHER TO ANOTHER WOMB, ANOTHER. HE WILL NEVER SEE THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD. HE’LL BE KILLED. THIS IS THE PUNISHMENT. THIS IS THE PUNISHMENT. BUT HE DOES NOT KNOW. Ananta-duhkham ca na veda mudhah. He does not know how the laws of nature is working, life for life. You have no right to kill any life. Even an ant you cannot kill even. You cannot kill even. If you kill, then you have to suffer.
These are not stories. These are not stories. There are many incidences in the sastra. Just like Vidura. He was Yamaraja, incarnation of Yamaraja, but he was cursed by a muni to become a sudra. Why? Now, one muni was brought in the court of Yamaraja, and he was to be punished by like punishment, sula, piercing the lancet through the rectum and it will come out. So the muni asked Yamaraja that “Why you have put me into this tribulation, this punishment? What is my fault?” THE YAMARAJA EXPLAINED THAT “IN YOUR CHILDHOOD YOU PIERCED WITH A NAIL THROUGH THE RECTUM OF AN ANT. THEREFORE YOU MUST BE PUNISHED LIKE THIS.” JUST SEE. IN CHILDHOOD PLAYING HE PIERCED. SOMETIMES WE HAVE SEEN, THE CHILDREN DO THAT. THAT IS ALSO COUNTED. You cannot do any harm to any animal, any living being. You cannot do. But these rascals are regularly killing. Although they have got this human form of body, although they have got intelligence, scientific intelligence, and so-called, but they do not know how nature’s law is working. They do not care to know. They say these are all mythology. But not mythology. It is not mythology. Na veda mudhah. They do not know what is the law of nature, that ananta-duhkham.
SO WE SHOULD BE VERY, VERY CAREFUL. WE ARE IMPLICATING STEP BY STEP. PADAM PADAM YAD VIPADAM. THEY DO NOT KNOW. THIS MATERIAL WORLD MEANS AT EVERY STEP WE ARE CREATING ANOTHER DIFFICULTY. Padam padam yad vipadam. Samasrita ye pada-pallava-plavam mahat-padam. (break) Krsna. Bhavambudhir vatsa-padam. For Him the great ocean of nescience becomes just like vatsa-padam, the water containing with the hoofprints of calves. That is called vatsa-padam. And this place, padam padam yad vipadam. This material world, where there is danger in every step, it is not for them. It is not for them. Therefore Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu has warned that niskincanasya bhagavad-bhajanonmukhasya. Anyone who is desirous of rendering service, dedicates life for the service of Bhagavan, Krsna… Krsna demands that. Sarva-dharman parityajya mam ekam saranam vraja. For such person, one who has decided, “Yes, I shall fully surrender to Krsna,” for such person, niskincanasya… Surrender means he has finished his all material business. No more. No more business. That is called niskincana. Kincana means “something,” and niskincana means that something also nothing. Anyabhilasita-sunyam jnana-karmady-anavrtam. There are so many achievement by karma, jnana, yoga, and so many things. But bhakti means finish this, all this nonsense business, karma, jnana, yoga. Simply surrender to Krsna. Anukulyena krsnanu-silanam.

He is a great sage.” So the king stopped the punishment and immediately came to see what has happened. Then he was immediately released. But he was very sorry, that “Why the judge Yamaraja punished him like that?” So he asked Yamaraja, “Why you have punished me like this?” “Now, in your childhood you pierced the rectum of an ant with a…,” what is called?
Devotees: Pin, straw.
Prabhupada: No, not straw. Prick, pricking?
Devotee: Pin.
Prabhupada: Kanta, kanta. We say kanta, that pricks. What is called?
Devotees: Thorn.
Prabhupada: Ah, thorn, yes. So therefore he was punished. Now just see. In his CHILDHOOD he was playing with an ant, piercing the rectum with a thorn. That is also taken account, “All right. You will be punished.” JUST SEE HOW FINER LAWS ARE THERE IN NATURE. SO THE MANDUKA MUNI DID THAT. THEREFORE IT WAS RECORDED HE SHOULD BE PUNISHED LIKE THAT.

So Manduka Muni also chastised Yamaraja, that “In my childhood, without any knowledge I did something and for which you have given me so great punishment. So you are not fit for becoming a brahmana or ksatriya. You become sudra.” So he was cursed to become sudra. Therefore Yamaraja took his birth as Vidura and was born in the womb of a sudra mother. This is the history of Vidura’s birth.

Australian devotee 2: Srila Prabhupada, in New Zealand we have a situation where the main industry is killing animals, the biggest industry, yet there is so much rain, so much nice atmosphere over there. Why is this? Why is there such a nice atmosphere but they are killing so many cows? Is that that they are innocent and they do not know and so Krsna is not punishing them so much?
Prabhupada: Yes, they will be punished. (pause) (break) …SO MANY MOTOR ACCIDENTS. AND THERE WILL BE WAR. THEN WHOLESALE PUNISHMENT. THEN KILLING, BEING KILLED WITHIN THE WOMB OF THE MOTHER. THEY ARE BEING PUNISHED. NOWADAYS THESE THINGS HAVE BEEN INTRODUCED. NOW THIS CHILD WHICH IS BEING KILLED BY THE MOTHER, THEY ARE ALL THESE SINFUL MEN. THEY CANNOT COME OUT EVEN, OUT OF THE WOMB OF THE MOTHER. THERE THEY ARE KILLED. NATURE’S LAW IS VERY STRICT.
