“No distortion, no cheating. This is the secret.
The secret is that I am presenting as it is.“
BBTI Considers “More Book Editing” (from KD)
KD: BBTI is considering removing “controversial statements” from Prabhupada’s Srimad Bhagavatam. The other day I was in the room with the book distribution Minister Vijay prabhu, who hosts that seminar here in Mayapur. The talk was about the editing of Prabhupada’s books, and Vijay prabhu said that at least the Bhagavatam was okay, and the host, a senior american devotee, said that he begged to differ on that opinion.
Then he told us that he had been speaking to Dravida prabhu who had told him that the BBTI had been considering removing all of Prabhupada’s “controversial statements” about women from the Bhagavatam for some time, and that it seemed that the time was getting close for them to actually do it. Only time will tell if they will actually do so.
—————
Prabhupāda: No distortion, no cheating. This is the secret. They give me credit, “Swāmījī, you have done wonderful. You have done…” I say the secret of wonderful is this, that I have not distorted it. I have presented Bhagavad-gītā as it is. It is open secret. (15th April, 1977, Bombay)
Prabhupāda: Everyone is giving his own interpretation. Eh? Then when, where is the importance of Kṛṣṇa? If Bhagavad-gītā is a book who is authority, and if you interpret and give your own interpretation, then where is the authority? Suppose Parliament passes one law, and if I interpret in my own way, then where is the authority of the law? This is the idea. If you want to give some idea of your own, give it separately. Why do you take Bhagavad-gītā and distort it? This is not gentlemanly, this. We are presenting, therefore, Bhagavad-gītā as it is, and it is being accepted. And before me so many svāmīs, yogīs went there. They also tried to explain Bhagavad-gītā, but nobody accepted. There was… In the history there was not a single devotee of Kṛṣṇa before my going. Now there are thousands. Why? The secret is that I am presenting as it is.
Mr. Rajda: As it is. Correct.

Introduction
His Holiness Jayadvāita Swami (“JAS”), an ISKCON Governing Body Commission (“GBC”)-authorised dīkṣā1 guru and Director of the Bhaktivedanta Book Trust (“BBT”), correctly explains that the Krishna Consciousness movement rests on Śrīla Prabhupāda’s books, and if these books are changed, then everything is lost: (1 Initiating)
“Our whole movement rests on Śrīla Prabhupāda’s books. And if the books are adulterated, […] then everything’s lost.”
(JAS Lecture, 5/5/13)
He raises this point because he has made “really large-scale” changes (running into the thousands) to Śrīla Prabhupāda’s Bhagavad-gītā As It Is, and thus he accepts that we should be concerned about the integrity of the books:
“And if the integrity of the books is in doubt, then everything’s in doubt. […] We should all be concerned about the integrity of Prabhupāda’s books. […] I’ve undertaken a really large-scale revision […] How do you know we didn’t mess up?”
(JAS Lecture, 5/5/13)
JAS is therefore a person who wields immense influence over the integrity of Śrīla Prabhupāda’s books, shaping what will be read as being the words of Śrīla Prabhupāda for generations of devotees to come. Given this influence, it is only right and proper for us to examine his integrity. And that is exactly what this book does. In particular, we examine the following claim made to establish JAS’s suitability for having undertaken this “really large-scale revision”:
“Since Śrīla Prabhupāda’s departure, Jayādvaita Swami has taken part in no philosophical heresies (and has spoken out against several), he has maintained his spiritual vows, he has served Śrīla Prabhupāda steadily.”
(www.bbtedit.com/whom-did-Srila-Prabhupada-trust, archived March 2015)
This examination is done using only the words of JAS and those whom he accepts as bona fide authorities. All emphases in this book have been added, unless otherwise stated.
PART A:
1978 – The Disobedience Begins
The chapters in this section document how, immediately
upon Śrīla Prabhupāda’s departure, JAS began a life of
disobedience to Śrīla Prabhupāda.
CHAPTER ONE
Disobedience After Śrīla
Prabhupāda Departs
Begins decade of disobedience
Following Śrīla Prabhupāda’s physical departure in November 1977, ISKCON set off on a different and disobedient path from Śrīla Prabhupāda’s original ISKCON. At the heart of this new disobedient path was the instituting of a false guru system of ‘11 appointed pure devotees’. Although there may be disagreement currently over what the correct guru system should have been, there is no dispute that the ‘11 appointed pure devotees’ guru system that ISKCON actually did follow at this time was wrong and did not adhere to Śrīla Prabhupāda’s orders. JAS admits this, stating that due to the influence of māyā (illusion), he joined the rest of ISKCON in disobeying Śrīla Prabhupāda by supporting this false guru system which “diverged from Śrīla Prabhupāda’s instructions”, for almost a decade straight after Śrīla Prabhupāda’s departure:
“But by the influence of mava, illusion, a different idea soon evolved—that Śrīla Prabhupāda had appointed eleven “pure devotees” to serve as the only gurus after him. These eleven, the idea went, should each serve as the spiritual master for a specific geographical “zone” of the world. This zonal guru system, as it came to be called, prevailed in ISKCON for about ten years, until its falseness became clear […] In 1986, ISKCON’s Governing Body Commission formally dismantled the system. In the years till then. Back to Godhead sometimes reflected and supported the erroneous zonal guru system. Here. therefore, we wish to admit this mistake. I was managing editor for some of those years. Satsvarūpa dāsa Goswami, editor in chief during those years, joins with me in apologizing to our readers for BTG’s conformity to the “zonal guru” error. In particular, we express our heartfelt apologies for contributing to the hurts and wrongs devotees endured when ISKCON diverged from Śrīla Prabhupāda’s instructions.”
(JAS, Editor in Chief, “An Apology”, Back to Godhead (“BTG”) #25-01,1991)
Satsvarūpa Dāsa Goswami, whom JAS states was the Editor in Chief of BTG during these years, and under whose authority JAS worked, was also one of these falsely proclaimed eleven “pure devotees” who formed the basis of this “zonal guru system”. Therefore, it is no surprise that, as stated above, BTG served as a mouthpiece for this false guru system, which JAS admits supporting as BTG’s managing editor.
Huge philosophical deviation
JAS explains that this false guru system he supported involved the GBC perpetrating such a massive philosophical deviation that it was “so thoroughly discredited” as to not even be spoken about just a few years later:
“13. After Śrīla Prabhupâda’s disappearance, for many years the GBC systematically misrepresented Śrīla Prabhupāda’s teachings and instructions about carrying on the disciplic succession.”
(JAS, “Several Grievances Against the Members of the GBC”, 5/3/87)
“The GBC represented to us. falsely I believe, that Śrīla Prabhupâda had appointed eleven pure devotees who were to be the spiritual masters for the whole Society, that they were the spiritual masters of their disciples, that they were essentially the spiritual masters of their Godbrothers, that each of them was supposed to be the spiritual master for the people in a geographical zone of the world, that the business of the… that we could only get Prabhupāda’s mercy through those Godbrothers and a host of other ideas, which are so thoroughly discredited that they are no longer even spoken about, practically speaking, in today’s ISKCON.”
(JAS, ‘Ṛtvik’ debate, San Diego, 1990)
Conclusion
Therefore, as documented by JAS’s own admission, straight after Śrīla Prabhupāda’s physical departure, he took part in a philosophical heresy known also as the “zonal-ācārya” heresy, which lasted for almost a decade.
CHAPTER TWO
Complicit in Wholesale
Disobedience
Large-scale deviation
In the previous chapter, we saw that JAS promoted a disobedient guru system which had been instituted by the GBC. However, JAS states that this disobedient guru system was only part of the disobedience to Śrīla Prabhupāda which the GBC instituted in ISKCON at this time. He reveals that the GBC actually promoted deviation in many areas. JAS documents all these deviations by listing 32 grievances. Below we present just a small sample of these grievances, with the full list given in the Appendix at the end of this book:
“I have tried to include only items pertaining to all or many present GBC men, not only one or two and not only those no longer active. […]
4. The GBC instituted, encouraged, and for many years belligerently and obstinately defended symbols, rituals, practices, teachings, and structures subversive to the unique importance of His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda, Founder-Ācārya of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness. […]
13. After Śrīla Prabhupāda’s disappearance, for many years the GBC systematically misrepresented Śrīla Prabhupāda’s teachings and instructions about carrying on the disciplic succession.
14. The GBC instituted, encouraged, and for many years belligerently and obstinately defended symbols, rituals, practices, teachings, and structures meant to create and perpetuate for a small group an elite status to which they were never entitled. […]
15. The GBC members have allowed, have failed to halt, or have arranged for or demanded gross misappropriation of facilities and funds for their own self-aggrandizement. […]
21. The GBC, both indirectly by impure acts and directly by confrontation and force, has driven large numbers of Śrīla Prabhupāda’s disciples out of their service, out of their homes, and out of ISKCON. […]
23. The GBC members have displayed gross, rampant impurity in their dealings with one another. […]
28. The members of the GBC have neglected and misrepresented numerous other teachings and instructions of His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda. […]
32. By allowing, advocating, taking part in. perpetuating, and defending these and other forms of contamination and decay, the members of the GBC have brought the ultimate managing authority of the entire International Society for Krishna Consciousness to a state of disrepute and pollution.”
(JAS, “Several Grievances Against the Members of the GBC’’, 5/3/87)
In summary, JAS’s Grievances list correctly exposes the GBC as being deviant, corrupt and impure, and having engaged in such disobedience to Śrīla Prabhupāda that it resulted in wholesale deviation. And that such deviation meant, according to Grievance no. 32, that the GBC effectively had no “managing authority” left, as such authority was now in a state of “disrepute and pollution”.
JAS accepted this deviant GBC
JAS’s list of grievances states that virtually all of the GBC men at that time, March 1987, had been deviating in many areas ever since Śrīla Prabhupāda departed. However, JAS continued to accept the authority of this same deviant GBC:
1978: While the GBC was instituting the false guru system mentioned in the previous chapter, JAS lined up to accept his sannyāsa-guru via the authority’ of a GBC recommendation:
“3. Sannyāsa candidates for 1978 are as follows: […]
Satsvarūpa Goswami — Jayādvaita. Ghanashyama […]
“2. Jayadwaita shall take sannyāsa immediately.”
(GBC Resolutions 1978)
“In 1978 he accepted the order of renounced life, sannyāsa.”
(“Biodata for Jayādvaita Swami”, JAS website, archived December 2014)
1980: The GBC recognised JAS’s loyalty to its authority by giving him the same responsibility as a GBC member:
“1) Resolved that each aspect of the Śrī Mavapur Development scheme be categorized and assigned to individual GBC representatives […] In presence of these resolution [sic] the following areas have been assigned to the following GBC members: […] e. Hospital project-Javadwaita Mahārāja”
(GBC Resolutions 1980)
1981-1984: JAS continues to function under GBC authority:
“2. That Jayādvaita Swami should edit a book of Śrīla Prabhupāda’s letters called Your Ever Well Wisher so that thev can be published for the benefit of devotees. […]
7. That Śrīmān Balindak Dāsa and HH Jayādvaita Swami will go over the proposed constitution with Śrīmān Jagadisha Dāsa and make recommendations.”
(GBC Resolutions 1981)
