THE DREAM OF ĀMĀRA , IMMORTALITY

[Compiled by Mohini DD]

Hiraṇyakaśipu wanted to become immortal, so he underwent such severe penances that the whole universe trembled. Lord Brahmā had to come personally to pacify him “What do you want?”

Hiraṇyakaśipu said, “O my lord, creator of all living beings in the universe, I ask that you make me immortal so that I will never die”.

Lord Brahmā replied, “Although I have a very long duration of life, even I am not immortal. I was born just like you, and one day I will die. I cannot save myself or anyone else from death, so I cannot grant your request of immortality”.

So although Brahmā lives for trillions of years, still he has to die. Wherever you go within this material world, either in Brahma-loka or in Patala-loka, you have to die. That is the problem. Kṛṣṇa says in the Bhagavad-gītā, “The real problem is janma-mṛtyu-jarā-vyādhi: birth, death, old age, and disease.”

Hiraṇyakaśipu wanted to solve these problems in a materialistic way, but that is not possible. When Brahmā said he could not make Hiraṇyakaśipu immortal, Hiraṇyakaśipu tried to secure immortality by trickery. He asked Brahmā to grant that he not be killed in any of these ways: by any weapon; during the day or night; on land, in water, or in the sky; inside or outside; or by any man or beast.

So Hiraṇyakaśipu thought he was immortal. But to protect Prahlāda Mahārāja, Lord Nṛsiṁhadeva killed Hiraṇyakaśipu without violating the boons granted by Lord Brahmā. Nṛsiṁhadeva was neither man nor beast but half man, half lion. Placing Hiraṇyakaśipu on His lap, the Lord killed him with His fingernails, on the threshhold of the demon’s palace, at dusk.

ŚRĪ ĪŚOPANIṢAD MANTRA ELEVEN 1969 Edition (Excerpt)

Material science can discover the nuclear bomb to accelerate the process of death, but it cannot discover anything which can protect man from the cruel hands of death, disease and old age.

From the Purāṇas we learn of the activities of Hiraṇyakaśipu: This king was materially very much advanced, and by his material acquisitions, by the strength of his nescience, he wanted to conquer death. He underwent a type of meditation so severe that all the planetary systems became disturbed by his mystic powers. He forced the creator of the universe, the demigod named Brahmã, to come down to him, and then he asked him for the benediction of becoming an amara, one who does not die. Brahmã refused to award this, however, because even he, the material creator, who has command over all the planets, is not himself an amara. He has a long duration of life, as is confirmed in the Bhagavad-gītā, but that does not mean that he doesn’t have to die.

ā-brahma-bhuvanāl lokāḥ
punar āvartino ‘rjuna
mām upetya tu kaunteya
punar janma na vidyate
BG 8.16

From the highest planet in the material world down to the lowest, all are places of misery wherein repeated birth and death take place.

Beginning from Satyaloka, the topmost planet of the universe, situated just below the eternal Brahmaloka, as described above, all the planets are material. And one’s situation in any of the many material planets is still subject to the laws of material nature, namely birth, death, old age and disease.

Hiraṇya means gold, and kaśipu means soft bed. This gentleman was interested in these two things, money and women, and he wanted to enjoy this sort of life by becoming artificially immortal. He asked Brahmã many things indirectly in hopes of fulfilling his desire to become an amara. He asked benediction that he might not be killed by any man, animal, god, or any living being within the categories of the 8,400,000 species. He also asked that he might not die on the land, in the air, in the water or by any weapon whatsoever. So on and on, Hiraṇyakaśipu thought foolishly that this would guarantee him against death. But in the end, although Brahmã granted him all these benedictions, he was killed by the Personality of Godhead in the Form of a half-man, half-lion. And no weapon was used to kill him except the nails of the Lord. He was killed on the lap of the wonderful Living Being Who was beyond his conception.

The whole point here is that even Hiraṇyakaśipu, the most powerful of materialists, COULD NOT BECOME DEATHLESS BY HIS VARIOUS PLANS. What, then, will be accomplished by THE TINY HIRAṆYAKAŚIPUS OF TODAY, who make plans which are throttled from moment to moment?

LIFE COMES FROM LIFE , The Second Morning Walk
Nobel Prize for an Ass

Dr. Singh. Some scientist hope that in the future they will be able to make babies in the test tube.

Śrīla Prabhupāda. Test tubes?

Dr. Singh. Yes, they intend to combine male and female elements in biological laboratories.

Śrīla Prabhupāda. If they begin with living entities, what is the purpose of the test tube? It is only a place of combination, but so is the womb. Where is the credit for the scientists if this is already being done in nature’s test tube?

Karandhara. It is already being done by nature, but when some scientist does it, people will give him the Nobel Prize.

Śrīla Prabhupāda. Yes, that is stated in Śrīmad Bhāgavatam: śva-viḍ-varāhoṣṭra-kharaiḥ saṁstutaḥ puruṣaḥ paśuḥ. This verse indicates that those who praise men who are like animals are no better than dogs, hogs, camels and asses. Sva means “dog,” viḍ-varāha means “stool-eating hog,” uṣṭra means “camel” and khara means “ass.” (2.3.19) If the Nobel Prize is given to a scientist who is a rascal, the men on the committee who give him that prize are no better than dogs, hogs, camels and asses. We don’t accept them as human beings. One animal is praised by another animal. Where is the credit in that? If the men on the committee are no better than animals, anyone who receives the Nobel Prize in science is fool number one, because animals are praising him, not human beings.

Dr. Singh. For some scientists, the Nobel Prize is the ultimate.

Śrīla Prabhupāda. They are rascals. They are speaking nonsense, and because they are juggling words, others are being misled.

Brahmānanda Swami. Nobel is the person who invented dynamite.

Śrīla Prabhupāda. He has created great misfortune, and he has left his money for creating further misfortune. [Laughter]

Brahmānanda Swami. The Gītā says that demoniac people perform acts meant to destroy the world.

Śrīla Prabhupāda. Yes, Ugra-karmāṇaḥ kṣayāya jagato ‘hitāḥ [Bg. 16.9]. They perform acts meant for INAUSPICIOUSNESS AND THE DESTRUCTION OF THE WORLD.

Minimum Words, Maximum Solution

Śrīla Prabhupāda. The individual soul is never lost. He does not die, nor is he born. He simply changes from one body to another, just as one changes garments. This is perfect science.

Dr.Singh. But why don’t scientists accept this?

Śrīla Prabhupāda. They are not nice men. They are rascals. They are not even gentleman. Under appropriate circumstances, gentleman will have some shyness or some shame. But these men are shameless. They cannot properly answer our challenges, yet they shamelessly claim that they are scientists and that they will create life. They are not even gentleman. At least I don’t regard them like that. A gentleman will be ashamed to speak nonsense.

Dr.Singh. They do not think before they speak.

Śrīla Prabhupāda. THAT MEANS THAT THEY ARE NOT HUMAN BEINGS. A human being thinks twice before saying anything.Kṛṣṇa makes the presence of life within the body so easy to understand. He says:

dehino ‘smin yathā dehe
kaumāraṁ yauvanaṁ jarā
tathā dehāntara prāptir
dhīras tatra na muhyati

[“As the embodied soul continually passes, in this body, from boyhood, to youth, to old age, the soul similarly passes into another body at death. The self realized soul is not bewildered by such a change.” (Bg. 2.13) In these two lines, Kṛṣṇa solves the whole biological problem. That is knowledge. Minimum words, maximum solution. Volumes of books expounding nonsense have no meaning. Materialistic scientists are like croaking frogs: ka-ka-ka, ka-ka-ka. [Śrīla Prabhupāda Imitates the sound of a croaking frog, and the others laugh.] The frogs are thinking,” Oh, we are talking very nicely,” but the result is that the snake finds them and says,” Oh, here is a nice frog!” [Śrīla Prabhupāda imitates the sound of a snake eating a frog.] Bup! Finished. When death comes everything is finished. The materialistic scientists are croaking–ka-ka-ka–but when death comes,  their scientific industry is finished, and they become dogs, cats or something like that.

KṚṢṆA BOOK TWO
Chapter 33/ Deliverance of Lord Śiva

Sometimes such demons as material scientists discover lethal weapons. They cannot show their meritorious power by discovering something which can save men from death, BUT INSTEAD THEY DISCOVER WEAPONS WHICH ACCELERATE THE PROCESS OF DEATH.

Here we have the example of the greatest demon ever in the history of this universe trying for immortality, āmāra. Did he succeed? No. We have Śrīla Prabhupāda’s valuable insights on materialistic scientists adventures into destructive missions of how to create disturbances for people in general over the last two hundred years. Since these devilish brains seem to  have realised that they are unable to create life they have switched their science to how to destroy life.

HUMAN BIODIGITAL TRANSFORMATION

Any product one wants to sell, needs a customer who wants and needs it. Obviously they found customers for their products who need them for their business. The following link is an official government paper which meticulously maps out in minute’s detail what they plan to use the assets of a human body and brain for. Coming back to the title of this article, āmāra, yes, believe it or not, is part of it. SCIFI? NO!

Will they succeed in becoming āmāra? No.
Will they be successful with the other stuff? Could be if Kṛṣṇa wants it that way.

To search the name of the lady takes three minutes.

Ending excerpt with my comment. Whole lecture below

So unless we have got our aim, target of life, then what is the value of life? This is amṛtatvāya. Is there any institution, is there educational institution or university or college where this teaching is given, that how you can become immortal? Is there any institution in the world? Throughout the whole world? No. They are simply teaching that you live like animal and die like animal. That’s all. You live like cats and dog and you die like cats and dogs and again become cats and dogs. Punaḥ punaś carvita-carvaṇānām (repeatedly chew that which has already been chewed).”

My comment regarding the above beginning excerpt. HGD
This still seems to be true so far as there are no teachers or institutions set up anywhere on or off line to even freely discuss let alone teach this topic one on one. There is no doubt that getting the books out is our priority but unless there is personal follow up available with qualified teachers then those we are trying to reach can be left to struggle unnecessarily with little or no support. No personal devotee association. Open temples used to provide that support. Now at this time in history with temples closed the use of the internet has to take the same full responsibility until independent physical temples are re-opened as was Srila Propaganda’s ‘original’ plan. Then with the amalgamation of free internet services and temple services the ability for the world to seek out its true spiritual inheritance will move swiftly overtaking the forces of Maya.

“It is possible to become immortal, to have eternal blissful life of knowledge. That is called immortality. Sac-cid-ānanda. Sat means eternity and cit means knowledge and ānanda means pleasure, bliss. We are part and parcel of Kṛṣṇa. Kṛṣṇa is sac-cid-ānanda vigraha (Bs. 5.1). His transcendental body is eternal, blissful and complete knowledge, His body. Therefore He’s speaking Bhagavad-gītā. If He’s an ordinary man, what is the use of hearing Him? Ordinary man will commit mistake, will cheat, will be illusioned. His senses are imperfect; how he can give complete knowledge? That is not possible. Therefore we are not concerned to hear any rascal. We want to hear Kṛṣṇa. We are not prepared to hear any rascal, so-called scientists and so-called philosopher, so-called God. No. We are not prepared. Because everyone is rascal. Everyone is full of mistakes, everyone is trying to cheat others, everyone is illusioned, and everyone’s senses are imperfect. How he can give knowledge perfect? That is not possible.

Therefore, we have to select guru. Guru means Kṛṣṇa. As Arjuna has selected guru, śiṣyas te ‘haṁ śādhi māṁ tvāṁ prapannam: (BG 2.7) ‘I am, I become Your śiṣya, disciple, and I surrender unto You.’ So to get perfect knowledge, we have to find out Kṛṣṇa or Kṛṣṇa’s bona fide representative. Then there is perfect knowledge. Then we can become immortal. Unless we get perfect knowledge. So Kṛṣṇa is sac-cid-ānanda-vigrahaḥ (Bs. 5.1), immortal. Kṛṣṇa is full of bliss, full of knowledge, and we are also part and parcel of Kṛṣṇa. So we have also the same quality, sac-cid-ānanda, the spiritual body. But because we have contacted this material nature, our blissfulness, our eternity, our knowledge, everything is now disturbed. Everything is now disturbed. We cannot be completely blissful. Anything you take, any pleasurable thing you take, it cannot give you always pleasure. It is not possible. This is not possible in this material world. However you may try scientifically to prolong your duration of life, live forever, it is not possible. And however you may pose yourself, cheat others, that you are the best man in knowledge, philosopher, scientist, you are a fool. That is not possible. Sac-cid-ānanda vigrahaḥ is Kṛṣṇa only (Bs. 5.1).

So we can also become like Kṛṣṇa along with Kṛṣṇa. Not outside. We can be living force along with Kṛṣṇa. So Kṛṣṇa is also very much anxious to take us back to Him. Therefore He comes. Yadā yadā hi dharmasya glānir bhavati bhārata abhyutthānaṁ sṛjāmy aham (BG 4.7). When these rascals forget that unless he goes back to home, goes back to Kṛṣṇa he’ll never be happy, that is the discrepancy of occupational duty. They have come here, kṛṣṇa-bahirmukha hañā bhoga vāñchā kare (Prema-vivarta), he has come here to enjoy, to lord it over the material nature, and has become entangled. So Kṛṣṇa comes, descends, to save us, to give us shelter at His lotus feet so that we may also become immortal like Kṛṣṇa, full of bliss and full of knowledge. That is called amṛtatva.
