Tṛṇāvarta – the whirlwind demon – kidnapped baby Kṛṣṇa

Tṛṇāvarta (the whirlwind demon) kidnapped baby Kṛṣṇa, and spun him high into the sky. Tṛṇāvarta flew higher and higher up into the sky so that he could drop down Lord Kṛṣṇa and kill him. Kṛṣṇa made himself unbearably heavy for Tṛṇāvarta too that suddenly he could not go any further, and he had to stop his whirlwind activities. Baby Kṛṣṇa made Himself heavy and began to weigh down the demon. The Lord caught hold of his neck. Tṛṇāvarta felt the baby to be as heavy as a big mountain, and he tried to get out of His clutches, but he was unable to do so, and his eyes popped out from their sockets. Crying very fiercely, he fell down to the ground of Vṛndāvan and died. He hit the stone ground, and his limbs were smashed to pieces by the transcendent baby Kṛṣṇa, who emerged without a scratch. His body became visible to all the inhabitants of Vṛndāvan.

gala-grahaṇa-niśceṣṭo | daityo nirgata-locanaḥ
avyakta-rāvo nyapatat | saha-bālo vyasur vraje

gala-grahaṇa-niśceṣṭaḥ—because of Kṛṣṇa’s grasping the neck of the demon Tṛṇāvarta, the demon choked and could not do anything; daityaḥ—the demon; nirgata-locanaḥ—his eyes popped out because of pressure; avyakta-rāvaḥ—because of choking, he could not even make a sound; nyapatat—fell down; saha-bālaḥ—with the child; vyasuḥ vraje—lifeless on the ground of Vraja.

With Kṛṣṇa grasping him by the throat, Tṛṇāvarta choked, unable to make even a sound or even to move his hands and legs. His eyes popping out, the demon lost his life and fell, along with the little boy, down to the ground of Vraja. (sb/10/7/28)

While the gopīs who had gathered were crying for Kṛṣṇa, the demon fell from the sky onto a big slab of stone, his limbs dislocated, as if he had been pierced by the arrow of Lord Śiva like Tripurāsura.

The gopīs immediately picked Kṛṣṇa up from the chest of the demon and delivered Him, free from all inauspiciousness, to mother Yaśodā. Because the child, although taken into the sky by the demon, was unhurt and now free from all danger and misfortune, the gopīs and cowherd men, headed by Nanda Mahārāja, were extremely happy.

The demon fell flat from the sky, and Kṛṣṇa was playing on his chest very happily, uninjured and free from misfortune. Not at all disturbed because of being taken high in the sky by the demon, Kṛṣṇa was playing and enjoying. This is ānanda-cinmaya-rasa-vigraha. In any condition, Kṛṣṇa is sac-cid-ānanda-vigraha [Bs. 5.1]. He has no unhappiness. Others might have thought that He was in difficulty, but because the demon’s chest was sufficiently broad to play on, the baby was happy in all respects. It was astonishing that although the demon went so high in the sky, the child did not fall down. Therefore, the child had been saved virtually from the mouth of death. Now that He was saved, all the inhabitants of Vṛndāvana were happy.

It is most astonishing that although this innocent child was taken away by the Rākṣasa to be eaten, He has returned without having been killed or even injured. Because this demon was envious, cruel and sinful, he has been killed for his own sinful activities. This is the law of nature. An innocent devotee is always protected by the Supreme Personality of Godhead, and a sinful person is always vanquished for his sinful life.

Kṛṣṇa is very dramatic in His actions. Each of His actions is different from the other. He likes variety because variety is the mother of enjoyment. He is the enjoyer, and everyone else is the enjoyed. Therefore no living entity is authorized to enjoy things independently from the Lord, because they are the enjoyed potency of the Lord. If the living entity attempts to enjoy independently from the Lord, his suffering is multiplied many times over the pleasure he experiences. This is the law of nature. Therefore, it is far safer to become a real devotee and enjoy with Kṛṣṇa, while remaining free from all material sufferings.

When Kṛṣṇa incarnates in this world, He also enjoys killing demons, using a different style each time. For example, when He killed Pūtanā he was holding her nipple with His mouth; when He killed Śakaṭāsura He kicked him with His foot; and when He killed Tṛṇāvarta He held his neck with His arms. Each performance also ends with a different result. When Pūtanā died she was screaming and beating her legs, but when Tṛṇāvarta died, he was motionless and, because he was killed in the sky, he made no sounds.

The word bala in the Viśvakośa Dictionary is defined thus: bālo mūrkho ‘yogye ‘śaktye ca pravrtteh, “The following are considered equal to a child: one who acts like a child, one who acts foolish, one who is unqualified to do the work he is doing, and one who does things beyond the reach of his capacity.”

Tṛṇāvarta was considered very powerful, but he foolishly engaged in kidnapping a child. Therefore, he is also considered childish. Before one makes a childish move, one should consider becoming a serious devotee of the Lord, functioning under the guidance of a genuine Spiritual Master. This is the most intelligent act a human being can perform, for then he is welcomed by the Supreme Lord. No longer will he be considered childish by Mother Nature.
