Prabhupada Kirtan Melodies – The Formula for Success?

One interesting subject that has brought to my attention by a few devotees is the performance of kirtan. A few months back Brahmananda had visited us here and had mentioned how the kirtans were a lot different in the early days in the the sense that the melody was very simple.

Today devotees sing many varieites of melodies coming from various sources. There are two opinions on the matter both of which I can see as valid yet one opinion I now tend to lean more towards. On one hand “there are no hard and fast rules for chanting Hare Krishna”, and thus devotees are inclined towards the “variety is the mother of enjoyment” idea while introducing many varieties of melodies, some Bengali, some made up etc. On the other hand kirtan can be taken very scientifically with consideration of the appropriate ragas, etc. One major position on this side is assertion that it is best to focus exclusively on the melodies, mood and sound vibration given to us directly by our spiritual master Srila Prabhupada.

One devotee said to me that by devotees chanting the melodies of Srila Prabhupada the movement will greatly expand . I’m now feeling very inspired about this realization and am eager to acquire a complete set of all Srila Prabhupada’s kirtans so that I can study them and always hear them as we are now hearing always the bhajans. Another senior devotee was telling me that he was there with Srila Prabhupada along with some other devotees asking Srila Prabhupada, “Can we sing like this, can we sing like that ?” , and Srila Prabhupada responded “That’s nice but mostly stay with the melodies I have already given you.” This devotee took it that Srila Prabhupada being very merciful gave some leeway , however he was most pleased with devotees simply following what he had given.

Hare Krishna,

your servant Madhavananda das.

[In relation to recording the ‘Govindam’ album in London with George Harrison, 1970] “Regarding the presentation of “Govindam” as well as other mantras, the vibration is always pure. I will give the theme and if the sound is Westernized that does not matter. But another point is that this specific sound of Kirtana as I sing is also another introduction of art that can be intermingled with Western art and such a combination will certainly be appreciated. But so far I know that the Kirtana tune is a specific representation of the Gaudiya Vaisnavas and this tune is appreciated all over India as unique. They say that the Kirtana tune is the specific gift of Bengal, and that is a fact. So why not utilize this tune in the Western countries under the able guidance of such expert musician as George?”

Personally I like the tunes given by Srila Prabhupada as they are very easy to chant and the general public can very easily join in. Too much changing of the tune or complicated tunes makes it difficult for the public to catch-up the tune, so if they can’t work out the tune how can they join in? And we want them to join in the chanting of the Hare Krishna mantra and also remember the tune as well. So if we want them to remember the mantra it is better to stick to a standard tune.

But there are many “standard” ISKCON tunes that have been sung by the devotees for a very long time which are very nice. Srila Prabhupada may never have sung them, but they have become “standard” also. These tunes were sung on many of the Kirtanas in Prabhupada’s presence and those Kirtan’s were very potent and it was those Kirtana’s that caused the Hare Krishna movement to spread all over the world.

As far as I know there has never been a Kirtana party that strictly stuck to chanting only the tunes Srila Prabhupada gave us, yet still the Hare Krishna movement spread all over the world under Prabhupada’s direction. Therefore as far as I can see the cause of the spread of the Hare Krishna movement is not the tune of the Kirtana, but rather the purity of the chanters, and the very fact that they are actually out on the street and chanting Hare Krishna daily!!

It is very nice to theorize about this and that, but the real thing is we have to be out on the streets chanting Hare Krishna and distributing Srila Prabhupada’s books on a daily basis. If we actually do this sincerely that will cause the Krishna consciousness movement to spread all over the world. That is the formula Prabhupada gave us and that is also proven to work. Prabhupada never forced the devotees to only chant the tunes he chanted so how can you do that? If IRM are going out and chanting in New York 4 times a week why not join with them and increase the Kirtana’s? Locanananda Prabhu is a very expert Kirtan leader from Prabhupada’s days and I am sure his tunes are very bona fied, standard and approved by Srila Prabhupada.

As for a “complete set of Prabhupada kirtanas” as far as I know we have it already in the “Prabhupada MP3 Archive.” There are a few more recorded kirtanas in the “Unedited Bhajans” [a 30+ set of tapes] and there are also some nice Prabhupada kirtanas on the Videos. I don’t think there are any more recorded Prabhupada kirtanas.

Prabhupada did not lead very many kirtanas except in the early days and as far as I know most of those were not recorded. Prabhupada had his disciples lead most of the kirtanas and it was those kirtanas and street chanting parties that spread the Hare Krishna chanting all over the world. So it was actually the kirtanas of Prabhupada’s disciples [inspired by Prabhupada of course] that spread the Hare Krishna movement all over the world, not Prabhupada’s personal kirtanas.

In conclusion personally I find Prabhupada’s tunes to be super-excellent and when I chant I like to chant Prabhupada’s tunes and the devotees like it and the general public can very easily join in also. So I think that is the best thing. When we lead kirtana we can chant Prabhupada’s tunes and the idea will catch on.

But the main thing is to be pure and actually go out on to the streets on a daily basis and chant Hare Krishna and distribute Srila Prabhupada’s books. This is the formula for success, not the kirtana melodies.

Unless the chanters are following the four regulative principles [no illicit sex, no meat eating, no gambling and no intoxication] and chanting at least 16 rounds of the Hare Krishna mantra daily there will not be so much potency in the kirtana. It depends on the purity of the chanters. There are so many sahijya kirtan parties in India with chanters adicted to all sorts of sinful activities. But they have very little effect. So that is the real difference in the kirtanas in Prabhupada’s time and now. In Prabhupada’s time most of the chanters were very seriously following the regulative principles, reading Prabhupada’s books, and chanting at least 16 rounds of the Hare Krishna mantra daily. Now many “devotees” are not doing these things… That is the difference.

Chant Hare Krishna and be happy!

  1. Pamho agtacbsp, I agreed is very important to follow the four regulative principles of mukti liberation for the sadaka bhakta , but we have to consider the guna and karma of the living entity , there are also the krpa siddhi sadaka, the nitya siddha never come contaminated by any guna and karma because they are beyond any guna and karma, we are ordinary living entities but still part and parcel of Lord Sri krsna that need to go back in param sva murti again , we betrayed Sri krsna and although He advised us to not come here at own risk we are here now unfortunately, no problem Sri krsna is all pervading we trying our best to not delude Sri Sri guru&gauranga the puri of Lord jaganath is a example of krpa siddhi most important thing is to chant hare krsna as much as one can read Srimad bhagavad gita daily do yoga asana cooking for krsna. If one can follow the regulative principles is better then one have to check the own guna and karma by engaging in hrisikena hrisikena sevanam bhaktir ucyate, agtacbsp ys servant haribol

Charles Dowson says ; “Why the question mark.? 🙂

Prabhupada Kirtan Melodies – ( Melodies as Plural ) create question that there are Chanters sing many varieites of melodies coming from various sources. WHY ?

      – ” The Formula for Success ” in the early days in the sense that the melody was very simple.

The Formula for Success is further explained in the article which is self explanatory.

      Hope it answers.

Hare Krishna. All Glories to Srila Prabhupada.

IMHO, should have been an exclamation mark (!) POSITIVE, instead of question mark (?) meaning maybe another alternative.
Regardless of what is explained in article, the heading should be “positive !” to leave NO doubt!

        Vāsudeva-parāyaṇāḥ
        Our ultimate goal is Vāsudeva

  3. Balaram das says:

“THEN HIS LIFE IS SUCCESSFUL” (The Positive Alternative- definitely NO question mark!)

“….So, tāṅhāra caraṇāśrita: The prabhu… Everyone is prabhu—that’s all right—but if that prabhu takes shelter of the lotus feet of the mahāprabhu, sei baḍa dhanya, he becomes glorified. Not to remain satisfied becoming a prabhu of your wife, children, family, country, or this or that, but you should try to become the servant of Mahāprabhu. Tāṅhāra caraṇāśrita [Cc. Ādi 7.2]. He’s glorified because he receives… To become under the lotus feet of Śrī.

If you take shelter of the supreme prabhu, Śrī Kṛṣṇa Caitanya Mahāprabhu, then your life is successful. Sei baḍa dhanya. He is glorified. To become servant of God or Mahāprabhu is very prestigious. It is not very easy thing to become servant of Śrī Kṛṣṇa Caitanya Mahāprabhu or servant of Kṛṣṇa. So if anyone agrees to become the servant of the supreme prabhu, master, then his life is successful. Sei baḍa dhanya. He is glorified….”
