TWO SWANS LIVE TOGETHER IN THE HEART

In this way both swans live together in the heart. When the one swan is instructed by the other, he is situated in his constitutional position. This means he regains his original Kṛṣṇa consciousness, which was lost because of his material attraction.

My dear gentle friend, both you and I are exactly like two swans. We live together in the same heart, which is just like the Mānasa Lake. Although we have been living together for many thousands of years, we are still far away from our original home. (SB 4.28.54)

Here it is clearly stated: haṁso haṁsena pratibodhitaḥ. The individual soul and the Supersoul are both compared to swans (haṁsa) because they are white, or uncontaminated. One swan, however, is superior and is the instructor of the other. When the inferior swan is separated from the other swan, he is attracted to material enjoyment. This is the cause of his falldown. When he hears the instructions of the other swan, he understands his real position and is again revived to his original consciousness.

The example of the two swans is given in the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam narration of King Malayadhvaja and his wife, Vaidarbhī, the daughter of King Vidarbha, who was nonother than King Purañjana, taking the form of a women.

When King Malayadhvaja died, the daughter of Vidarbha began to lament, incessantly shedding tears, which soaked her breasts, and crying very loudly. She felt great anxiety upon being left alone. Bereft of her husband’s company, she felt exactly as the deer feels upon being separated from its mate. That most obedient wife thus fell down at the feet of her dead husband and began to cry pitifully in that solitary forest. Thus the tears rolled down from her eyes. (SB 4.28.51)

My dear King, one brāhmaṇa, who was an old friend of King Purañjana, came to that place and began to pacify the Queen with sweet words. The brāhmaṇa inquired as follows: Who are you? Whose wife or daughter are you? Who is the man lying here? It appears you are lamenting for this dead body. Don’t you recognize Me? I am your eternal friend. You may remember that many times in the past you have consulted Me.

The brāhmaṇa continued: My dear friend, even though you cannot immediately recognize Me, can’t you remember that in the past you had a very intimate friend? Unfortunately, you gave up My company and accepted a position as enjoyer of this material world.

My dear gentle friend, both you and I are exactly like two swans. We live together in the same heart, which is just like the Mānasa Lake. Although we have been living together for many thousands of years, we are still far away from our original home.

My dear friend, you are now My very same friend. Since you left Me, you have become more and more materialistic, and not seeing Me, you have been travelling in different forms throughout this material world, which was created by some woman.

Actually, you are not the daughter of Vidarbha, nor is this man, Malayadhvaja, your well-wishing husband. Nor were you the actual husband of Purañjanī. You were simply captivated in this body of nine gates. Sometimes you think yourself a man, sometimes a chaste woman and sometimes a neutral eunuch. This is all because of the body, which is created by the illusory energy. This illusory energy is My potency, and actually both of us—you and I—are pure spiritual identities. Now just try to understand this. I am trying to explain our factual position.

My dear friend, I, the Supersoul, and you, the individual soul, are not different in quality, for we are both spiritual. In fact, My dear friend, you are qualitatively not different from Me in your constitutional position. Just try to consider this subject. Those who are actually advanced scholars, who are in knowledge, do not find any qualitative difference between you and Me.

As a person sees the reflection of his body in a mirror to be one with himself and not different, whereas others actually see two bodies, so in our material condition, in which the living being is affected and yet not affected, there is a difference between God and the living entity.

TWO SWANS LIVE TOGETHER IN THE HEART

In this way both swans live together in the heart. When the one swan is instructed by the other, he is situated in his constitutional position. This means he regains his original Kṛṣṇa consciousness, which was lost because of his material attraction.

The original home of the living entity and the Supreme Personality of Godhead is the spiritual world. In the spiritual world both the Lord and the living entities live together very peacefully. Since the living entity remains engaged in the service of the Lord, they both share a blissful life in the spiritual world. However, when the living entity wants to enjoy himself, he falls down into the material world. Even while he is in that position, the Lord remains with him as the Supersoul, his intimate friend. Because of his forgetfulness, the living entity does not know that the Supreme Lord is accompanying him as the Supersoul. In this way the living entity remains conditioned in each and every millennium. Although the Lord follows him as a friend, the living entity, because of forgetful material existence, does not recognize Him.

When the living entity falls down, he goes into the material world, which was created by the external energy of the Lord. This external energy is described herein as “some woman,” or prakṛti. This material world is composed of material elements, ingredients supplied by the mahat-tattva, the total material energy. The material world, created by this external energy, becomes the so-called home of the conditioned soul. Within this material world the conditioned soul accepts different apartments, or different bodily forms, and then travels about. Sometimes he travels in the higher planetary systems and sometimes in the lower systems. Sometimes he travels in higher species of life and sometimes in lower species. He has been wandering within this material universe since time immemorial. As explained by Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu:

brahmāṇḍa bhramite kona bhāgyavān jīva
guru-kṛṣṇa-prasāde pāya bhakti-latā-bīja
(Cc. Madhya 19.151)

The living entity wanders into many species of life, but he is fortunate when he once again meets his friend, either in person or through His representative.

Actually, it is Kṛṣṇa who personally advises all living entities to return home, back to Godhead. Sometimes Kṛṣṇa sends His representative, who, delivering Kṛṣṇa’s very message, canvasses all living entities to return home, back to Godhead. Unfortunately the living entity is so greatly attached to material enjoyment that he does not take the instructions of Kṛṣṇa or His representative very seriously. This material tendency is mentioned in this verse as grāmya-matiḥ (sense gratification). The word mahīm means “within this material world.” All living entities within this material world are sensually inclined. Consequently they become entangled in different types of bodies and suffer the pangs of material existence.

  1. pamho agtacbsp, only by the mercy of the SUPERIOR SWAN (paramatma) one is be able to avoid the material desire and then given up the self enjoyment born from the refusal to serve SRI KRSNA, how is that possible? because SRI KRSNA TAKE THE STOOLS OUT OF THE MOUTH AND GIVE THE SWEET OF DEVOTIONAL SERVICE TO ANY LIVING ENTITY WHO CHANT HARE KRSNA DAILY I mean the paramatma make everything to go wrong materially in such way he can understand what is his real business by making HIS devotees aware of the original purity, just think to the relation of the water and the liquid to remember the original purity between us and krsna then everything is krsna and simultaneously different from krsna and to use everything in krsna service is the purpose of self realization otherwise one get more degraded by the three guna of material nature until one become a insignificant animal ,one need to be detached from whatever is separate from krsna because that’s rubbish covered nicely by maya sukaya but in reality there is just stool inside and outside the material body and although everyone knows what come out from the nine doors of the material body everyone want still enjoy all the crap inside a stink material body,we must catch that divine love that SRI CAITANYA MAHAPRABHU GOT FOR US because only by catching that love one can be saved from the fire of lusty desire which is the main root of the material world then come krodha anger madness etc..so is better to chant hare krsna as much as we can because is not worthy to lose the eternal life for craps.agtacbsp ys haribol

  2. IS MY PRAKRITI SAID KRSNA is not yours prakriti this is the main point to understand that the prakriti the material nature don’t belong to us therefore krsna make everything to go wrongly in the material world until one can understand what belong to us and what belong to krsna and that’s everything because there was only HIM in the beginning then EKO BAHU SYAM HE MULTIPLIED Himself.agtacbsp. ys haribol

  3. pamho agtacbsp,we must remember that the material happiness make krsna unhappy and the proof is there also,it was in Rome a devotee called manasa titha just arrived from india and immediately had sex with a bhaktin young female devotee ,he was doing sankirtan books distribution but his happiness made krsna so unhappy that killed him in car crash, all the other devotees could not believe manasa titha is dead, KRSNA SAY IS MY PRAKRTI AND IF ONE DON’T UNDERSTAND IT WITH GOOD MANNERS KRSNA USE THE BAD MANNERS, he got diksa from SRILA PRABHUPADA but he finished badly his troublesome journey on planet earth unfortunately this is the karma of all the vikarmi but if one want become a akarmi then need to realise this point.agtacbsp ys haribol
